Reading habits.

Considering that you are asking in regards to books following A Game of Thrones, my advice would be to spread them out. I read them rabidly once I found them, and then found myself waiting two years for what I thought was the end of the series. Only to discover that there were TWO more books to come, and I have now been waiting years for even one of them. No word of a lie, it will be post 2010 before the series is finished.

On a more positive note, by the time the next book comes out, you may have forgotten enough to safely and hopefully enjoyably reread the books. I know I will.

Although I enjoy a good stand-alone, I read a lot of Sci-Fi series books. I rarely if ever read series books back to back. I like to intersperse other authors and books between volumes. I’ve accumulated a large TBR pile over the last couple of years. If a series captures my fancy, I typically read one a month for the first 3 or 4 volumes. With longer series, my reading pace usually slows down after that, but I rarely drop a series without completing it once started.

I try to read all the series in a row so that I don't forget things. With ASOIAF, I would suggest reading all 4 of the ones that are out in a row. There are so many things to forget, and each book builds on the others. Yes it will be a long wait until the series is done, but I think it is worth reading them all in a row.

Thanks Pyan indead it was, see there is proof that a few beers or shorts does not always refresh the parts that others can't.

I used to read series back to back (where possible) but now I don't ever. I much prefer to break up series by reading other books in between each volume. I even try to ensure I don't read two books by the same author in a row. And if possible, I avoid reading two books in the same genre in a row.

I also break up short story collections by reading something else in between each story. I find I give each story time to digest that way.

The last time I broke my rule and read an entire series in one go was with the Chronicles of Amber (which I read a couple of years ago). It was so gripping, so intense that I just couldn't resist reading on (lord knows I tried!)

If its a series that does definitely follow on i will only start reading book one if i have the other books to hand. I won't read Icerigger until I can find the last book,The Deluge Drivers.
