Robot evolution

In all the years of this thread, I have seen many robots do many things, and I often thought “when will they become commonplace?”

I think a world in which lots of ordinary people have a robotic companion (or whichever term for it you prefer) will be seen as the time when society takes another great leap forward (just like previously the arrival of telephones, and later mobile phones, and the internet)

Here is one such robot, available to you for under $4000 including shipping

Just as there was once a time that people used to look up to watch a plane fly overhead, someday there will be a time when you can walk down the street with a robot like this and nobody will stare.

I'm fed up with those prancing quadrupeds–they inhabit You Tube by the dozen.

Compare these two videos of robots playing football. The first is from 2015, the second is from 2023

With feet like that you could only stumble around like that! Bit like a toddler really, sort of cute.

The point here is that these ones will be prancing down your streets before much longer.
If you doubt that, just think back to when people didn’t have drones. It’s not that long ago. This is similar.
What will be their purpose apart from scaring the sh*t out of the real dogs? And what will be the cost of one when it gets mowed over by a vehicle?

I am storing "prancing quadrupeds" in the insult bank in case I get into an argument with some dressage horses. It's a great phrase.

We should be well beyond talking about Martians now. There aren't any! Well worn trope?

If nothing else, they will get the general public used to seeing robots in the street, and then the later types won’t seem quite as scary/bad.
Think of the options for terrorist activity?
