What NEW AUTHORS of high (epic) fantasy should I read?

If you mean 'new' as in authors new to the field who have emerged recently, than the obvious choice is Joe Abercrombie, whose First Law Trilogy (The Blade Itself, Before They Are Hanged and Last Argument of Kings)is absolutely superb.

Yes, Joe Abercrombie's The First Law trilogy is definitely worth a look...I'm on the verge of finishing Before They Are Hanged which is proving to be even better than the The Blade Itself. Forgive my ignorance...is the third volume already out?

You may also enjoy Scott Lynch's Gentlemen Bastards series.

I think the third book in Abercrombie's First Law series is due out in March.

Yep, in March. Have already preordered it from Amazon.

Ahh...thanks guys! hope he'll not let us down in this much anticipated third volume.

Tom Lloyds The Storm Caller and The Twilight Herald, The first two books by this new author. I really enjoyed both these books and I think the Storm Caller was voted the best seller on some SF/fant web site. Both good Fantasy books with the Twilight Herald being the best book by a new author I've read in a while.
Heres a link to the authors page, have a look.

Although I haven't read his second book, I certainly enjoyed his first book. Will certainly be following this author.

Another author I would like to suggest is Sara Douglass. The Axis Trilogy was her first, then Wayfarer Redemption, the second trilogy to the series. Both very good works.

The third book isn't out.

Some of us have still read it though. It is fantastic :D

Malazan and Prince of Nothing... only try George Martin if you don't mind the possibility of no conclusion and 3+ years in between each subsequent book?

Yup, thats the only thing IMO going against ASOIF and in general George R.R. Martin. If only he could pump out books like Erikson does with his Malazan series...

Personally I have found a new favorite in David Coe, he is pretty good I have also heard Brandon Sanderson is good, I have only read a part of his but I liked what I read, I could also since you are looking for new authors recommend myself, if you like a lot of magic, intrigue and battles, A V Wedhorn, A King's Quest, The Kingdom Chronicles

George R.R. Martin is pretty oft-cited name in answer to your question, and for good reason.

I'm also partial to Tad Williams. The trilogy he's writing now is damned good.

I'll throw in another vote for GRRM's A Song of Ice and Fire series. :) They are all great reads. Hopefully the 5th book will be out this year. (fingers crossed!)

Lois McMaster Bujold?

I've read and enjoyed three of hers now - the Chalion series, and they seem to fit the description "high fantasy".

I only read one of GRR Martin, the one about vampires and a Mississippi riverboat. I didn't like it, and I'd take some persuading to read another.

I enjoyed Robin Hobb's - Assassin's Apprentice (1995) and Royal Assassin (1996), but it all fell apart in Assassin's Quest (1997). I stalled just a few pages into Ship of Magic, and haven't read any since.

Hmmm...well these are NOT the last 10 years but for S&S you can also try Karl Edward Wagner's Kane, C L Moore's Jirel Of Jory, Michael Moorcock's Eternal Chamipon, elements of Steve Erikson's masterpiece series Malazan Book Of The Fallen, Howard's Conan, Lieber's Fahrd and the Grey Mouser and the list goes on...

Really? I thought Fevre Dream was one of his best and the best Vampire novel along with Matheson's I Am Legend I've read to date. Funny how tastes differ....:D

Russell Kirkpatrick is a fairly new author (2004). His first trilogy, Fire of Heaven, was for me a very well written series, wonderful characters and storyline.

His Second trilogy Husk, Book One Path of Revenge is turning out to be just as good and I am looking forward to reading the second book very soon! I would dare to say that his work is almost as epic as Steven Erikson. :)

Our Joe Abercrombie is another author I would certainly recommend and I have to agree that Tad Williams is another great writer.
