Whilst aimlessly looking on Amazon for my next saga to tackle, I looked at George R R Martin cos a friend in the states recommended him, and noticed there's a new book available to pre order!!
So I emailed my american mate full of joy to share this bit of news with him, to find he knew nothing about it and that its not even on GRRMs website!

Attached is the link, so is it a new book or not?
Amazon.co.uk: A Dance with Dragons (A Song of Ice & Fire): Books: George R.R. Martin

further down the page it says release date 7th april 2008.

Ok first off this is the lastest book in his A Song of Ice and Fire series *the best there is now in fantasy!!*
It starts with A Game of Thrones - which you really really should read

Anyway this is the latest book, but he is taking a long time to write it - its not written yet. This means that the Amazon release date is an old on, not yet updated. Fans are eargerly awaiting this book - but its not ready yet :(

Amazon has been known to put such dates as they were speculated by the publishers. At the risk of being corrected by Wert or Raven, I will say that I have a gut feeling that we will soon hear some very good news from GRRM. By that, I mean probably sometime in February. The reason is that it seems he has been writting alot more these past few months and it's likely the final push to complete ADWD.

ah so i led my american friend down the garden path then?
I did have a wonder when he couldn't find it on Amazon.com.
Ooops never mind
OR i do mean to get into these but have to finish WOT first only up to book 6 so far.
Gonna see if waterstones are doing a 3 for 2 so i can get 7-9 or just get the whole lot depending on price. its only another 2 books after 9 aint it?

darn darn darn!
in that one link he mentions at lest 5 new authors for me!!
and I was trying to cut down the to read pile!

Yup i try to avoid Georges What im Reading page, last time i ended up with over 9 books that needed reading, im such a fanboy doing whatever the big man says is cool :p

As others have said, no way for April. June was looking possible for a while...but now the smart money is on October/November for the UK and maybe 1-2 months later in the USA.

To get it out by October in the UK he needs to finish by late May, which seems more than doable. Nothing is solid until he says it's done though.

Thats just bad advertising by Amazon then. If i was a die had fan and pre ordered it, how frustrating would that be? Mind you if i was a die hard fan then i would know he hadnt finished it yet.
Ah well time to burst the bubble for my american friend. Thanks guys.

You've actually been able to preorder ADWD almost since the release of AFFC. Amazon often will put a release date that, more than likely, is completely inaccurate. This allows them to start selling the book. Of course, these days it's better to just find the author's website and get it straight from them.

I preordered and paid for AFFC 3 years before it was released. When it was finally released, lo and behold, I wasn't sent a copy. The large chain book store wouldn't honor what I had paid 3 years prior. I had a few choice words for them and went and bought another copy from a mom and pop store. Still burns my shorts!!

What was their excuse for that, Midnight? Did they have no record of it? How could they get away with that? I've always been afraid of something like that happening so I've never preordered a book until a definite release date is announced by the author. It's terrible that they wouldn't give you the book.

Mid, a friend of mine pre-ordered AFFC from MediaPlay back in 2001. The company closed right around the release date for AFFC. He just wrote it off, said they could keep his money since they seemed to need it and also that he had no intention of reading any more ASOIAF until it was complete.

I can't help but feel I should have rationed the books out. I probably spent 3 months reading them. And now I have to wait.

Bantam have just released their catalogue for the latter part of 2008. A Dance with Dragons is listed for October 2008. As usual don't believe anything until you see it on GRRM's website etc.

More interesting is the official cover blurb (see the other thread I started) and what appears to be a confirmed release date for Scott Lynch's The Republic of Thieves (26 August 2008).

GRRM was asked - inevitably - about the release date at his first signing in Portugal.

His response was that no, the book wasn't finished (which we knew) but it shouldn't be too long after he gets back. It will definitely be done before the end of this year unless it isn't ;) Voyager have apparently said they can get the book out 3 months after he finishes it (presumably unless that means hitting the peak of the Christmas rush, which publishers tend to avoid). GRRM also said it should be an early 2009 release, which indicates he's not expecting to finish it within a week or two of getting back, as if he was the book could still creep out in late November.

He did reiterate that the UK edition should be out ahead of the US one again, but hopefully not too far ahead.
