In Van Loon's 'Lives' A friend and he and Erasmus have dinner parties with one or two figures from the past. Torquemada, Theodora, Shakespeare, for example. Prior to each party Van Loon gives a brief sketch of the visitors. That seems a good substitute for meeting people without actually changing the past.
