Your favourite bookshops

Did you ever spend time with the little books about second-hand book shops -- with plenty of very brief quirky comments -- ach, I'm not remembering the author's name now. He had a code for comments, some of them rather blunt, e.g. for staff who follow you around rather than letting you browse, that sort of thing. He was devoted to Indian food. What, what was his name?

I think these started in the 1980s, not sure when they stopped appearing. He was a keen bargain hunter.
You might be thinking of Drif's Guide. Self-published by the enigmatic Drif Field up to the late 1990s. Well worth tracking down an old copy for its acid commentary: second-hand bookshops as a metaphor for the state of humanity.

Drif '93 lists 2 bookshops in/near Aylesbury.
Peter Eaton's in Weedon. "Extr lg. Almost solid roast beef. Needs an entire day!"
The Bookshop Square Edge. Town Square.

I heard about these a while ago, & got one on interlibrary loan. I live in North Dakota -- a long way from any of Drif's bookshops -- but it still was fun to browse the guide I had.

I think the house may have been Peter Eaton’s, a country house with wooded gardens. Unfortunately it seems Peter Eaton died in October 93 although the company is still called Peter Eaton (Book Seller) Ltd it now deals with rental of property. Another one gone, a few months back I went looking for a shop inNorthampton only to find that it had closed 15years ago when one of the partners died, they exist solely as a website now.

I don't get the same feeling in bookshops that sell new books as I do with second hand book shops. There's a lovely wave of nostalgia the comes over you in a second hand bookshop. Unfortunately, you don't see them too often any more.

Over the years I've picked up many gems at Moe's Books in Berkeley, California. Four floors of used books on tall shelves!
