JANNY WURTS - Most under-recognized Fantasy author!

Wasn't sure whether it should have gone in the curse thread or not.

No, it shouldn't go in Curse. YOU should start a new thread for the second arc (Ships and Warhost) of the series. As the most recent reader of that tome (tomes), you are just the guy to do it.

Hey, you might even get invited to be a fifth horseman, given your enthusiasm!;)

I'm not quite sure how to structure the thread though. And what to put in them:D

Ross, first, when on the sub-forum page, click "New Thread"...;)

Then, do a title, like "The Ships of Merior/Warhost of Vastmark: The Wars continue...SPOILERS POSSIBLE" (that's pretty crappy, but I am working off the top of my head here, so give me a break). You could split it into one thread for each book, but I think they go together quite well.

Then, write out the general purpose of the thread, i.e. examining Arc II (SoM and WoV), followed by a nice big spoiler warning. Some series really need these, (A Song of Ice and Fire comes to mind), and as Janny revels in surprising her readers, spoilers really can ruin a read of her books (at least the first time through, kind of like finding out Darth Vader was Luke Skywalker's father before seeing The Empire Strikes Back the first time). Anyway, the spoiler warning is important.

Then, put down your general thoughts on Arc II (SoM and WoV), any questions you have, things you liked, loved, or disliked. Things that made you howl, or weep, or laugh (Faerie Toes was my favourite).

The structure, after you do that, pretty much takes care of itself from then on, and if it gets out of hand, some moderator will come by and smack it back into place. This latter being said, the moderators don't tend to interfere too much with discussions, unless someone is being nasty, which is rare, or tries a threadjack, in which case they get banished to the Spectral Minglers in The Lounge (if they are really bad, they get forever locked in Thread Killers Anonymous).

Thanks for the info, my good man! Will have a look at doing it at some point.

And Darth Vadar is Luke Skywalker's dad!!?? I never knew.  ;) (that's a joke by the way just incase:D)

I think there's a requirement to post to a thread 10 times before you're allowed to consider banishing folks there, Clanny you troublemaker.....:D

Hey, I'm trying to prevent trouble!;):D

'Course, I've been known to pop up there myself!

Hi all. I am new in the forum and just wanted to post in here as Janny is one of my favourite authors ! Her work is inspiring and has led me to want to write myself. I've noticed that Janny seems to receive a lot of support on here and wanted to add my voice to the many !

Welcome, AW (or should I call you Sethvir?:D) to the Chrons. If you haven't already, open a thread in the Introductions sub-forum and tell us a little more about yourself. In the interest of helping you avoid spoilers in Janny's sub-forum here, which book in the Wars of Light and Shadow are you up to?

EDIT: Ooops, I see you already have the Introductions thread! Good show, and welcome again!

Hi Grimward, i wouln't presume to the full name sethvir :) the earth link would mess with my brain ! lol there is no need to worry about spoilers though i'm fully up to date having read stormed fortress over christmas ! Also have read the empire trilogy and Ride to hell chasm. Have already posted in intro's ! any questions will be answered though (within reason ! lol)

Excellent, AW (and you can call me Grim, or even hey you!;)). Please weigh in where so inclined, the more often the better!

EDIT: Well, if you're not Sethvir, doesn't that only leave Shehane Althain?:D

:) nice one grim ! i just picked the name as one to show my appreciation for all things Wurts ! Can't wait till the next story ark begins! Is there a different thread where specifics can be talked about? Nearly posted something and then thought, hang on what if some people aren't up to stormed fortress?!

I think Clanny started a thread for this underneath "Initiate's Trial" to reflect Janny's next arc....

*checks*

....yep. Here you are .

If you're willing to put up with my silliness within that thread, that's where much of the current speculation occurs. There are other specific threads where we do some of that, too...typically, anything prefixed with "Spoilers" in the title is a pretty safe harbor for this type of discussion, as those who've not read thru Stormed Fortress are given fair warning that there's content within they've not yet covered....

Also (and you've probably already done this, too, but just in case;)), if you go to the main forums page and select Janny's name from the list of authors, you'll see all of the threads that have been started with her stuff in mind, at least as organized by our intrepid moderators (who truly do yeoman's work here!).

I am getting conflicting reviews but it seems like most ppl like Wurts. If I like Erikson and Martin and Fiest am I safe with Wurts. My wife read the first few books and she loved it. Does Wurts write action as well?

From experience, can only speak to Feist (Erikson and Martin are still in my to be read list), but if you read and liked the Empire series that Feist and Wurts collaborated on, you have some taste already for her stuff, Bi. She's gotten better since then, too. I'm told by others who've read Erikson and Martin that Janny's work is by turns comparable, but also easily distinguishable.

Regarding action, after she establishes her world in the first several chapters of the first book of Wars of Light and Shadow, there's plenty of that....or are you referring "action" as a category of literature, perhaps?

EDIT: Ah, connected the question to your first post in this thread, where you'd reached the 100 page mark in Curse of the Mistwraith but found it slow going. It picks up soon after, then does a little more groundwork, then takes off in earnest, if that helps....

More people to the Wurts group:D Fantastic:)

I've almost finished Fugitive Prince myself, the amount of reading has slowed down since I lost my job and I'm busy trying to get a new one. I'm definitely getting there though.

Am very sorry to hear about the job, Ross. Hoping prospects pick up (and pay off!) for you soon!

Having read all of Feist and MArtin (Erikson is next on my list of to -do's !) i would say Wurts is a pretty safe bet. She takes greater care and preperation than Feist imho and isn't quite as sordidly brutal as MArtin can be. However her world building is breath taking and her characterisation is, for me, the best in the business. If your one of those readers that likes extensive infomation to be able to truly picture whats going on then Wurts should be for you. :D

Cheers for the info Grim, i'll probably join in the speculation when i get chance ! Probably when i'm at work like now ! lol Just have to be quick on the alt tab incase the boss comes in !

Hmm...not a bad precis friend. Having read all of Feist, Martin, Wurts and Erikson perhpas I can add slightly more to your comment...;)

OK, Wurts IMO is a superior writer to Feist and very close to matching Martin. Erikson would probably fit somehwere b/w Feist and Wurts in writing ability but Erikson is No. 1 by a country mile when it comes to worldbuilding (Tolkien aside).

Cheers....:)

Interesting Gollum, i will look forward to reading Erikson then because if his world building is better than Wurts then i'm guaranteed enjoyment :) As a side note i would say that whilst i revere Tolkien as much as the next man i think he has been surpassed in every aspect of writing, he's still the man though because without his vision those that followed would not have been able to do what they did, another classic case of standing on the shoulders of giants !
