Barristan Selmy.
Arianne Martell.
Dolorous Ed.
Tyrion.
Dany.
Mellisandre.
Sandor Clegane.
and, up to the end of ASOS at least, Cersei.

Boaz picks his favorite character with a dart board....

In no particular order

Barristan Freakin Selmy
Maester Aemon
Petyr Baelish
Stannis Baratheon
Lynn Cobray (is he evil? Gay? a self-serving gay pedophile?)
Bronze Yohn Royce
The entire Stark Family

Oh, and Roose is a **** because he swore oaths to Robert, Eddard and Robb (probably Rickard as well) and then foreswore those vows. At least Vargo Hoat followed the money. Roose, Lord Walder, Balon, Arianne, Cersei, Jaime, Tywin, and Renly are all oathbreakers and traitors.

psh all those people you just labeled that he swore an oath to are oathbreakers. Everyone is an oathbreaker. Robert's Rebellion anyone? Everyone that is vying to unite the throne is an oathbreaker and because of the location of House Bolton he didnt have a choice, they would have crushed him if he said he didnt want to join robb. To help heal the country and unite it, he decided to join what seems to be the winning team. He improves his station and his House at the same time by dispatching of a pathetic boy "king" who thinks he can be king of the north and split the kingdom. What a joke. Bolton commands an awesome presence and by far he is the best :p

He's an extremely unpleasant character, his political actions notwithstanding.

But now we have someone to play Devil's advocate.

He didn't die. The Hound persona "died" there by the river and Sandor was "reborn" as the large quiet brother on that isle. He is the one that when Brienne visits is digging the grave with a bad limp and again the same very large brother with the limp is seen again cleaning the tables. His hood is raised as to not let anyone see his face. Re-read that chapter. Elder brother chooses his words very carefully when speaking about the Hound's "death".

I am going to re-read that! I knew he couldn't be dead. I think I may just re-read the whole series again.

Welcome Evey!

The innundation of characters is what I love about ASOIAF. I was trying to tell my sister tonight about the volume of characters, their different personalities, and the resulting plot lines... she swore she'd never read anything of this sort.

Now my fave is Tyrion.

Thanks for the welcome Boaz! I like the idea of picking with a dart board. There are too many good characters in these books.

hah i'd hardly call myself a devil's advocate. Afterall as i stated previously, three of my most favorites are jason mallister, beric bondarrion, and arthur dayne. I wouldnt consider those characters unpleasant, but yes, my favorite IS roose bolton! haha yea, i dont find him unpleasant at all. I've always loved hearing descriptions of him and i feel he just radiates power. Forgot the exact quote of course, but the part where it said he is very soft spoken yet he is the type where everyone quiets down to hear what he has to say. I imagine/pretend that he is the one that killed catelyn as well!

Heard a rumor that there might be a POV in a dance that is called 'reek'. I can only hope that its true and i get to read somemore about him, especially if theon is still alive being tortured! muaha

heh the zombie tywin lannister

favorite character has always been Arya, the dark humour that runs throughout her chapters is devishly delightful.
shame she's blind now, but if she becomes like a blind assassin much like masterful blind swordsman in asian cinema and anime, that'd be very cool.

I also liked the Hound alot, hope he abandons this silent brother thing and takes up his sword again as the badass that he truly is.

Once again I make a joke and Boaz gets the credit for it....this world is incredibly unfair. Next thing you'll tell me is Boaz gets to live in Colorado and I have to live in the Middle East.

On the subject of Roose Bolton and Oathbreaking....

While true that Roberts Rebellion was for some an excercise in falsehood, you have to concede that the obligations of nobility are a two way street. Just as the Houses have a responsibility to the throne, the throne has a responsibility to the Houses, and through them the people. I would contend that Aerys broke faith with at least House Stark first by killing both Eddards father and brother in horrible fashion for the crime of demanding a member of their family returned to them. Then he broke faith with House Baratheon and maybe Arryn by demanding that Edd and Robert be handed over to him. So for at least Jon, Ned and Robert there was no falsehood. Their oaths were broken by Aerys and the realms bled.

There was some discussion on Roose and the relative value of his betrayal. Certainly Robb never broke faith with Roose, but could Roose claim to never have broken faith with the crown? If all his actions were merely a ploy to keep his holdings from being overrun by Northmen intent for blood then he is a noble sort and never betrayed anyone. I would contend that we know how Roose is so clearly thats not the answer but if I were writing history books thats how Id spin it.

And lastly, the timeless question about Roose...Did he actually stab Robb at the Red Wedding?

haha dont forget, you might say that robb never broke faith with roose, but he did marry that 16 yr old and completely broke his agreement to marry a frey. What a slap across the face. And as you say, winners write the history. I believe it could be possible that roose bolton knew that if he stayed loyal to the throne then his lands being in the north would be subject to annihilation. So he decided to be patient and look for the opportunity to prove his loyalty to the lannisters and the throne. It was ideal. Perfect. And yes, roose did kill the pathetic boy wanna-be king himself and that just proves his loyalty triplefold

Definitely Rhaegar, Oberyn and Petyr Baelish - the first two just being generally badass and the latter being the character who I think is best written, most interesting and has the most realistic motivations.

it seems to me that Roose was playing a very calculated game in this Game of Thrones. He was never going to be king himself, but he cleverly, and opportunistically, played both sides of the war... he professed loyalty to Robb, but was in contact with Tywin... clearly he's not a nice person, he's also not even remotely cool - he's a faithless, self-serving, conniving, back-stabbing, but still chillingly charismatic Lord of the North. He's anything BUT noble. He rather reminds me of Stannis in some respects... expects his due an all that...but in Roose's case, he doesn't seem the type to reward service or loyalty himself - as Stannis does - in his rather warped fashion.
Anyone can say that they never betrayed the throne, when "seemingly" siding with their enemies... but there will always be a cloud of profound mistrust over Roose Bolton and his descendents. They will never rise further. but their current position is assured - enough...

I also really like Doran Martell. I feel really sorry for the guy and I think he's one of those essentially good people.

Who just wants to methodically and systematically murder every Lannister he can find and who just happens to have been working secretly for sixteen years to overthrow the government. Yeah, he's good people.;)

I think if a certain group was responsible for the rape, torture, and murder of my sister and her children....I'd want to make them die too....a lot.

Yeah, and there's a gentleness to him, all he really wants to do is watch the children playing in the water gardens.

Come on Boaz, let's face, it Lannisters are all bad, Martells are all awesomely good, Starks are all honourable, Tullys are all boring, Targaryens are all crazy...:p

He just wanted Lord Tywin, Gregor Clegane, and whoever killed Rhaenys (I don't think he knew it was Amory Lorch.) Possibly wanted Jaime. Probably wanted Robert Baratheon. Maybe Ned and Jon Arryn. I don't think he would've harmed Myrcella. And since you mentioned overthrowing the government, does anyone else think his plan to make Arianne the queen of 7 Kingdoms was absolutely awful?

Yeah because that's like not his plan at all. He's planning to marry Quentyn off to Daenerys, thus Quentyn in a boat heading to Slaver's Bay.
