Melanie Rawn - Anyone else like her?

I'm well into the Star Scroll now. I'm enjoying all the characters and working up into anticipating how the dragons are going to have a bigger role in the stories. Rawn is and 'even' writer. She tempers bad things with good parts, so you never get too bogged down. I'm also finding it interesting that some of the characters are starting to question the involvement of the Sunrunners in the politics of the country. Magic will give those in power a great advantage, but you know in your heart that it is ultimately not a good thing. And, you have to feel for Rohan, all he wants is lawfully structured society. Anyhow, you can tell I'm really getting into it now. I've just ordered the Dragon Star trilogy as well.

Yes, I can tell. That's good. It shows that you like the story and are starting to care about the characters. The Dragon Star trilogy will give you more of the stuff you want with regard to the dragons.

I would recommend the Rai-kirah trilogy, starting with Transformation. It is really a rollercoaster ride as the story unfolds. I really appreciated the resilience of the lead character, Seyonne.
I read the Bridges of D'Arnath as well, but found the Rai-kirah more memorable.

I will go to the store and get this soon.

Do any of you fellow Rawn readers like her other series? The Ambrai series. I really enjoyed this series as well and I'm still waiting on the last book to come. If any of you liked the Dragon Prince and Star Trilogies, then you definitely should check out Ruins of Ambrai (first book in series).

This series has a totally different type of world than DP/DS and very intense characters. It is a good story.

I finished the Dragon Prince trilogy and just started Dragon Star. I like the continuity of characters and the geography is becoming familiar now. There is a lot of detail about who runs what holding and now we're into second and sometimes third generations from the original characters. I really am partial to the way that magic is evolving from what was previously a skill to something that is powerful and instills fear. It is not taken for granted, and we don't often get to see magic from the point of view of major characters that do not possess it.
I thought Rawn, although a very talented author was basicly a romance novelist.
I tend to disagree, though I guess everyone's opinion of romance differs.
I think the romance parts are secondary to the politics and intricacies of the plot. She does have strong pairings but these men and women still maintain their separate personalities and don't always live a 'happily ever after life'.

You can say that again, elvet....as you're about to find out.....:D

And I'd be interested to know where you got the idea of her being a romance writer comes from, kyektulu.

So has anyone heard/read anything about when the next book in the Exiles story, "The Captal's Tower" will be released or if it is even being written?

I was reminded of this Thread because I am currently re-reading "The Ruins of Ambrai, and just finished re-reading the entire Dragon Prince & Dragon Star Trilogies.

I tried several years ago and couldn't get into her. I may try again, but I always seem to have a large backlog of unread books.

I read the two Dragon trilogies, and really enjoyed them, but never ventured into Ruins of Ambrai. The reason for this is that I have made a vow not to start any more unfinished series, as I have several on the go from the last two decades (Jordan's Wheel of Time, Kerr's never-ending Deverry stuff, J.V. Jones' Swords thing, and of course my two big outstanding faves, Wurts' Wars of Light and Shadow and Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire. There are probably others, but these come to mind).

Until Ms. Rawn finishes Ambrai, I ain't startin' it. I don't have enough time to read new books, let alone do all the re-reads necessary to remember everything from these long epic series that take the better part of two decades to finish.

I read Dragon Prince/Star and enjoyed them very much. There were a couple things I found annoying, but nothing that made me stop reading it. My problem is that the ending wasn't really an ending and it feels like it needs another three books to finish Pol's story. There was a big relationship thing left unfinished and it kept mentioning special young kids like they were going to tell us more when they are grown up.

I read the two Ambrai books as well. They were just as good as the other two trilogies. I've heard the book might actually come out this year, but rumors are rumors so who knows. But she's a really good writer I thought with great characters and a great story.

I thought about trying her Spellbinder book, her foray into urban fantasy, but the reviews are pretty mixed on it. Most say it needed to be cut in half. But at the least that her writing was good.

Shingetsu, that is exactly what I thought. She did leave us hanging when it came to Pol and Sionell's relationship, as well as all of the children. I would like to know what is so special about Meig also. Yes, I think she should write another book or 2 and finish it out.

As for the Exiles's series, I still like them and really want her to finish.

I'll have to check out the Spellbinder book. I haven't really looked at anything else she has written, because I'm still waiting to finish the Exiles series.
