Sheri S. Tepper

Right that's it. I'm confiscating Moontraveler's CC right now....;)

Moontraveler does seem to have an, ahem, shall we say unlimited, budget for books.

My dream come true, as long as I had the time to read 'em, which would require independent wealth, etc.

Since when did time to read ever become a factor? ....Not part of my world I'm afraid.. ;)

What? *innocent look* I look for bargains at sales and "used" book stores, honest! (This forum needs a "little angel" smiley (along with a "little devil" smiley) )

..and those were bought with some spare cash I had in my wallet, I didn't even touch plastic... (Sometimes, one has to choose between supper and few books; and a few books always win with me - especially if you panic that they might be gone if you tarry... :p )

Yes, time is a problem, isn't it.. Dang, why do humans have to sleep!

I'm reading my first Tepper book right now with "Beauty". I also have "Grass" on my to-read shelf which I shall read at some point this year. They are in the fantasy and SF masterworks series respectively. I'll see how I go with these and see if I'm impressed enough to read more of her work. So far (and it's still early days), I am finding her writing style engaging and enjoyable.

You and me both as far as "Grass" goes, Sir Egg. It's next on my list after I finish "Ender's Game" from Orson Scott Card. Loved "After Long Silence", and looking forward to "Grass".

I liked Beauty very much. As I remember it, Tepper is able to create some truly bizarre and vivid alternate realities. But there are parts of it near the end which might not be entirely palatable to today's SFF fans. At the time I read it, I thought I understood the point she was trying to make in that part of the book, but considering everything she's written since, it would seem not.

I was also impressed by The Awakeners.

Marianne, the Magus, and the Manticore, is a slighter work, but also, I would say, one of her most imaginative. It's just fun to read.

I read Grass so long ago, I don't remember any of the details. I do know that I thought it was good at the time, but I wasn't in love with it.

Woo, spooky - I've just finished a re-read of The True Game, and am a third of the way into the prequel, The Chronicles of Mavin Manyshaped.

Hadn't looked at either for years, and then this thread gets bumped...

I re-read Grass recently (for the first time since it came out) and was very impressed. Tepper is just such a brilliant story-teller, and has such great ideas. I didn't realise until recently that Grass has a couple of sequels, so I have managed to find copies of both and they're now on my (large and tottering) to-be-read pile.

The True Game was the first Tepper I ever read, and it captivated me. I have all of the books in that series, awaiting a re-read...

Am reading Grass now. Thoroughly enjoying it. Not overly dark (yet, although I'm only half thru it). The only other one I've read (After Long Silence, as noted above), Moontraveler, is a standalone novel. It will give you a taste for her, although Grass definitely shows expansion of her skills, imagination and plot-weaving.
