About the book Eragon...

To answer the question. The reason Eragon is so great is that it saves people time.

If you read Eragon then you dont have to watch star wars read LOTR, Dragonriders of Pern etc.

Somehow i dont think people will choose one of most disses series of fantasy before legendary works like LOTR,Star Wars etc

Not being a wise guy, i see your point. I was disgusted by the book before i got too long in it to see all the rip offs that is been talked about so much.

Well I haven't yet read the book, but I did see the movie. After watching the movie, I was completely turned off of the book. Thought it was terrible.

And after hearing what you all have to say about the book, it seems I would be correct in not picking it up.:)

My main concern was just the bad writing. After having read masters of prose like GRRM, Williams, Mieville, Gaiman, et al, this kid's writing just felt bad.

And the sad thing is that he thinks he is good.

What was it he said. In my writing i strive for the lyrical beauty of Bewolf the poem and Tolkien.

*claps* :D

I actually couldn't finish reading the book, because the writing was so bad. As someone else has mentioned, after the harry potter phenomenon, the media needed a new fantasy writer, and a kid was the best option. People tend to believe what the media tells them, which is why the book has done so well.

I understand how you all feel about Paolini's writing. I'm too young to be able to get my writing to sound like a proper piece of work so I have the same problem as he does. The only difference is I know that my writing needs to improve. :D I think that is something he lacks because if I were him (well I guess I'm in the same boat as him anyway) then I would write the stories, finish all of them, hone them over the years and then see if they were good enough to publish after he had tried to publish some smaller stories.

That's the other problem that he took a huge story spanning four books for his first writing project. Sure that's what I like to think I'm working on in the background but I'd never dream of trying to get it published before anything else.

Whereas this is a valid point, some of us simply can't think shorter. My first writing project is also a series, just because that's all I've ever been interested in reading; I have a long attention span.

Now if only my parents had their own publishing company ....

Well, yeah, but imagine getting grounded in that scenario!

You, the child prodigy author: "But Dad......!"
Father: "I'm very disappointed in you. We're moving your publication date back to 2011."
Mother: "And to think of how proud we were...."

Talk about frustration! :p;)

Seriously, though, good luck with your stuff, Gidde, and let us all have a crack at it here (as you've probably seen, you won't want for feedback!).

This board is so helpful. I almost bought this book at Costco once. Now, I will never, ever read it.

I might read something if the kid gets better, but I'll wait for others to experiment first.

I tried to read the book to see if the movie'd be worth going to. (Jeremy Irons caught my attention.) I couldn't get past the first 5 pages or so. The story, the style, everything turned me off and sent me running for other fav.s in the kids' section. (The Thief by M.W. Turner was my choice, I think.) Those who mucked through the rest have my deepest sympathy.
