It's not really a 'must' to read them in order. Jim's said several times that he's designed the series so each book can be a one-off. It's helpful to read them in order, b/c you can see the timeline unfold, but it's not required.
Essentially, it boils down to - 'how anal are you about reading a series in order?' XD
Me? I like to read them in order. I have comic books I haven't read yet b/c I'm missing a piece.
But I have read the Dresden books 'in reverse' before - which is just as fun. =)
