I think the US remake of The Grudge was excellent, it kept the best bits of the original and added another layer. Seeing Buffy being all at sea in a foreign culture added to the weirdness of the whole film. The scene where she went shopping and couldn't read any of the labels on the food and couldn't speak to anyone really accentuated the horror of what happened afterwards.
Remakes (or, in this instance, almost an alternate version) of foreign films, when done by the same director, can be interesting. I wouldn't say it was a better film, or added another layer for me (especially as the span of time and the implications of the original extended much further), but I would say the two rather complement each other in various ways... unlike the American remake The Ring, for instance, which lacked all the subtlety and spreading implications of Ringu....
I havnt looked at this site yet but may well bookmark it. I agree there are very few good horror films being made. I think the best I saw even remotley recently was Event Horizon and recently was scared witless at eh Grude re-make (still havnt quite got the courage to watch the original Japenese version) but apart from that, well quite frankly its been slasher after slasher.
I find a good slasher fun now and again (I liked Scream and Urban legend) but its almost all remakes of screaming virgins being chased by gentlemen with large cooking impliment's (no not a fish slice!) just getting a bit bored by it.
Hellboy is kind of a cross over in my view, there are horror elements, but also superhero elements. His dad is a demon after all! Also his arch enemy was brought back form the dead in the first one. The next film is focusing on the more mytholgical elements of Hellboy I beleive.
