One positive about SMG, is that she was able to provide a source of optimism somehow, but she was sort of internal, but maybe good for the group because she was not critically judgmental.
Dollhouse is good. It's has lived up to Joss Whedon's good name.
I really enjoyed it for it's exploration of what makes a person/personality - even though there was good writing and acting involved. It has a unique plot that was able to explore concepts not usually viable in ordinary shows. For example, in my favourite episode, one of the characters sees what all her loved ones really think of her after she passed away. It was pretty interesting.
