How you attack the "To be read" pile...

Razorback.

You need help. :)

Have you considered starting a library.

As payment you could ask for a synopsis when they return the books.

Just a thought.

I refer to my to-be-read pile, but (like Kostmayer's) it's really a list. I've only 2 books in the list that are physically here at the moment.

I don't have a 'to be read' pile in the sense of a pile of unread books. I shelve them when I buy them so there's several hundred unread books scattered on shelves all over my home.

Next to my bed I have a small pile (usually five or six) books that are currently being read. When the pile runs down and all the books have been returned to the shelves I walk around and pick out books to rebuild the pile.

It very much depends on the mood at that time. They might all end up being non-fiction, or collections of stories for example.

Right this minute there is Mister Pip by Lloyd Jones, The History of Mr Polly by HG Wells, Dark Alchemy edited by Jack Dann & Gardner Dozois, Love In A Cold Climae & Other Novels by Nancy Mitford and I Am A Cat by Soseki Natsume.

I think you have had bad influence on my Nesa, ever seeing you post to me about reading several books at the same time. I have had it as a rule. Which doesnt work for me since it takes much longer for me to read them then when i read one book at the time :p

I cant focus on one book anymore. Before i read atleast one book a week. Now im down to 1-2 a month and its summer and raining so much that i have more time inside the house than my usual summers with outdoor sports like Basketball, soccer etc.

Which is why i like you i have a small pile with 5-6 six books that i currently read near my living room soffa.

Heh also like you i have books i have started reading but gonna read later put back in the shelf with bookmarks to remember where i was in the story. I have atleast 10 books like that in my shelf.

I've decided not to buy any new books till I've read the ones I have waiting, Haven't counted them, but currently about 20.

I discovered, Amazon's wish list and add any new ones to that. That way I'm not cluttering up my limited space at home - I've also had to move a few times in the last 5 years and got sick of carrying books about that dont get read, costing me money in storage and moving, blah blah. I thought I might as well wait until I'm ready to read it before buying.

now and again, one will jump the qeue if I'm in a bookshop and it's too irresistible, but otherwise it forces me to read stuff which otherwise could be decades till it's read, or an otherwise classic of it's time be overtaken by more modern work.

fehw...
I'm not the only one, then. For a while i believed i was sick...
My TBR is now at the "ashaming" level. I have one shelf in the bookshelf dedicated to TBR books. it should hold around 50 books at "full". Now it is massively overflowing. If I include that, plus stuff lying around and the ones "hidden" between the read books, i am probably around 100.

it MUST go down to 50. TO this purpose i am trying to do the following:
a) do not buy ANYTHING until the pile is down to size (failing miserably :()
b) read the books that have been already started (20 probably)
c) pick the thicker ones
considering that I am rarely able to read more than 2 books a week, i have a lot of time in front of me

Actually, when the pile is in an healtier condition i just tend to alternate genre, avoid reading more than 2 books from a serie and try to do also some old/new alternance (as in arrival order in the pile)

on the point a) i found a nice way NOT to buy books when in shops: i photo them with my mobile... now i have LOTS of pictures of books :D

I am slowly getting my "too read" pile down (probably about 20 odd books). I have a little cupboard and they're all sitting in there waiting.

I have decided that I am not reading the books that a friend has lent me, when I did not ask to be lent them and have very little interest in them - until I've finished.

I decide it largely on date of purchase (i.e. the most recent books are getting read last). If it is part of series then in series order. I had however a backlog of star trek/wars books and i have alternated them between the other sci fi and fantasy books. So, for example, once I have finished the Wheel of Time book I'm reading I will be reading a star wars (Betrayal)

I will however immediately read the new keys to the kingdom book or any new Dresden files.

My to be read pile is more of a list. A mental one as well.

ON that list are books people have recommended, books that I've looked at but couldn't borrow/buy at the time, books by my favourite authors that I haven't read yet, and unfinished series.

I'll be almost finished a book, so I'll find a book on the list that I feel like reading, and reserve/borrow it at the library. If that isn't available I'll find something else to tide me by.

At the moment I am reading quite a big book, but I have G.R.R.M.'s A Game of Thrones waiting for me when I finish, and after that I plan to read The Shining again.

I don't have a 'to be read' pile anymore  Am waiting to get a new publications next time I am in the bookshop...

You mean...you haven't an unread book in the house? Shame on you, Rosie....:p
