Merlin: BBC 1 - Saturday Nights

I started out with some doubts about the series, but I enjoyed the last episode and will be watching it again.

oddly enough the longer the series goes the weaker it seems to appear to me.
Arthur has changed a little quick from his arrogent self to a more restrained chap - a change we expected to see, but I just don't see much of a triggor in the story presented to initiate the change. He seems overly protective of Merlin without much provocation in the last few episodes - I would have expected such a big shift after this recent episode.

Maybe I am being a little harsh, but the story has yet to really grab my attention

Yeah, they should've kept Arthur as the somewhat unpleasant spoilt brat he was in the first episode. Still worth watching though.

I like to think that Arthur has realised the value of Merlin. Merlin proved his courage in the first ep' when he stood up to Arthur twice and saved him, in the second ep he proved himself trust worthy when it was proved that he was telling the truth about the encharnted shield. in the third he proved that he was clever and curagious going with Arthur to face the monster and in this one he drank the poison knowing it could kill him just to save Arthur. That kind of loyalty would change your view on someone. (plus what child dosnt like to do the oposite of what their perants expect)

true - but Arthur;s general disposition has changed - he is less brash than he was. Agreed this is not something we were not expecting to see develope, but take the seriousness of the tourney - he bested the tourney the year before so aside from the serpents its an experience he has been through before. I just feel that we lost that first episode Arthur too quick

In these episodes we can watch the devellopement of a real friendship between Merlin and Arthur. As I understand, their destiny are strong related and they should be friends in order to accomplish what they are supposed to.

They are both young, so they still need to learn a lot of things.

I really like the music. Although, it reminds me the music from the Lord of the rings.

They could have strung out the "ass" in Arthur abit more, but im not sure they wanted to risk that if the want a second series, it needs to be 'young teen' friendly. they wanted the story to get 'interesting' Quite quickly.

i agree, the music scores have been done well.

(Nice to see you Alexa, thanks for your hospitality at the cafe, i was gona pay a visit later on)

When we first met Arthur, he was amongst his friends and, frankly, showing off.

One might hope that without such a spur, a less obnoxious character might emerge. And so it has. (I wonder: does it help that, though there is a clear master-servant relationship, Merlin does not kow-tow to Arthur, but does his duty, even as far as risking his own life, something that Arthur, too, must do, however high born he is?)

I would like to know more about Merlin's parents and childhood. He's a natural sorcerer and this shoul be interesting.

I feel the story is a bit forced in the first episodes, too. That's too bad. They should wait to get audience before planning a second season.

(( dont you hate it when someone make the same point but with far less words))

Thanks Ursa, you put it much better than i could.:D

I think thats why they have moved the story so quickly Alexa, to try and draw the viewers in so the are commisioned for series 2. I hope they delve deeper in to Merlins past too, Gyus having the book and in this weeks working the magic to cure Merlin may have been the seed for that.

Merely a summing up of your earlier post (#6), sloweye, which listed Merlin's value to Arthur.

Well, "his friends" dissapeared quickly. As a prince, he cannot expect to have real friends at the court.

I agree, both do their duty, Arthur as a prince and Merlin as a servant, but there is something more between them, something you cannot describe as a simple duty thing.

Thatt's right.

And Merlin often seems to behave (in his own context) in the way that Arthur wants to do in his. For all he is a servant, and dutiful, Merlin is a free spirit. While we haven't seen Arthur's upbringing, it's clear that he's had the weight of his future crown drummed into him.

Spot on Ursa, Merlin can do alot that Arthurs Father wont alow him to do, and this is encouraging Arthur to Take Risks he Wouldnt have befor.
Also Arthur seeing the bad in his father, the things he needs to avoid to be a respected king as well as an effective one.

I agree.

Arthur wanted Merlin as his personal servant, especially because he saw in Merlin someone not really ordinary.

Arthur didn't want Merlin as a servant, it was forced on him by Uther.

Actually, Uther "rewarded" Merlin for saving his son. You made me watch again the first episode, so I realized I forgot some details.
