Percy Jackson series - Rick Riordan

I'm surprised there hasn't been more discussion on this series (unless I've missed a thread). I just finished the 5th and final book today, and it left me wanting more.

The Percy Jackson books were very well though-out, with the stories intertwining and really coming together in the end. The author definately knows his Greek mythology, and manages to stick to the myths despite putting them in a modern setting. I've found myself doing some research in non-fiction books on Greek myths just to learn more about some of the characters and events that are referenced.

I'm sorry to see this series end, since I've really enjoyed reading about Percy's adventures. :)

Guessing you wouldn't be surprised to find out Rick Riordan was a professor of mythology before Percy Jackson made him popular.

I have read the first series and the three books of the second series. I would recommend them to people of all ages. I will agree that they aren't as good as the Harry Potter novels but then again a series that captures an audience like Rowling did with her work only comes along once in a generation really. The Percy Jackson books are 2nd in the youth category for me over the last 15 years with only Potter being better. There will be a 9th book out next year as well as the 2nd movie. Apparently they are going to try to follow the 2nd book a lot closer than the first movie followed the first novel.

What are people thinking about the new movie coming out?
The first one was horrid

The second movie tried to make up for the shortcomings of the first one and did an ok job of it. It did have some stuff in it that the second book didn't but for the most part it was a lot better.

By the way the 9th book in the series, House of Hades, came out about 4 months ago. It was a very enjoyable read and I can't wait for the 10th to come out this fall.

I agree that the second movie attempted to make up for the faults of the first, but in some ways it still seriously missed the mark. Clarisse was way too similar to Annabeth. Neither looked at all like their book descriptions, and in fact they acted too similar as well. Clarisse should have been bigger and tougher, not as "pretty".

I really should start on the new series. Since I liked Percy Jackson so much, it should be worth it.

I got into this series a couple of years ago, and my immediate thought was "This guy is a <beep> genius." From that moment on, I sped through the series (and the Kane Chronicles) and am currently waiting (impatiently, but still waiting) for Blood of Olympus.

The Percy Jackson series are action-packed reads - never a dull moment!

I'm currently using them as assigned reading for the middle-schoolers (mostly boys) to encourage them to get reading so as to improve their English.

It's working wonders! They have demanded that we read the entire series!
