Malazan - How important is the order in which you read the books?

I fear we're outrageously diverting this thread, but seeing your fetching new hatted appearance, I shall say that I thought I knew who had, but maybe I was wrong...!

Thanks Hoopy and murphy, I have decided to do a reread of Gardens of the Moon. I can already tell its going to be beneficial!
OK, back on topic....GOTM definitely requires a re-read. In fact I'm planning on re-reading the entire series once we get to the publication of book 9 and book 10 is close to it's publication date.

Cheers...

Well since you have already started the re-read, good luck but I was just going to say you might have been able to get away with a summary of the book to jog your memory since it is still quite early in the series.

If you start re-reading every time you don't get something in these books, you'll never make it past the first 200 pages of book 2 :D ;)

I don't know how fast a reader you are but I read GotM to TtH without break and it took about 5 months, mind you I also read ICe's two books in with them aswell.

The answer is fairly rapid. I would finish GOTM through to TTH in approx 2 months if necessary but I like to savour good fiction.

Well thanks Quick Ben and Gollum. :) I was completely lost the first time I read GOTM, so I think a reread was in order. Perhaps I'll keep some notes for myself so I don't have to reread the books every time I pick up a new one in the series. But I am already seeing many things and putting some things together that I didn't pick up on during my first read.

Anyone know if there is a site for Malazan that is similar to Tower of the Hand for ASOIAF?

I'm intrigued by this series, given the many comparisons to Martin. I'm a fan of pretty brutal reality and tough prose. But i have to say, the covers they have for these books in the US are among the ugliest covers I have ever seen on a book!

I agree, that's why I bite the bullet and order from Amazon UK. The new covers are quite nice. And the cover for the limited edition version of GotM is absolutely fantastic. See here. But as much as I'd like a copy, I haven't won the lottery yet to be able to afford it.

wow that is a cool cover, but no way would i paythat much for a book!!!

@ Gollum, that pretty darn fast. i think the problem with this series for me was that there were lots of breaks in the action. with other series' i will continue to a break or chapter end, but Malazan was too easy to put down and therefore took longer to read.
