What Game Are You Currently Playing?

I’m hoping now that I seem to have the basics sorted out that I can concentrate on the actual game. I feel like a tourist because, right now I’m just wandering around marvelling at the scenery:)

Still learning Skyrim. Still fighting the worst UI ever. Still enjoying the vistas.

I’m only at level 5 and still struggling against the most basic foes. Fighting wolves impressed me. Instead of a straight fight, I notice that they back off if being beaten and then they try to circle around your character and resume the attack from another direction.

Sly tactics with humans too. I‘ve fought two bandits and one has dropped to his knees saying that he’s had enough. As I finished off the other bandit, I was blindsided by the allegedly beaten bandit initiating a sneak attack. I died and know better now not to take such behaviour as a sign of my victory.

That's an oddity with Skyrim: anyone saying they surrender is always lying. It makes you feel like a merciless lunatic, but then this is fantasy Viking land, after all. Slay everything!

I finished the main missions of Aliens: Fireteam Elite on "casual" difficulty level and a few on "standard". I've really enjoyed this game and I'm very glad that I bought it. Ultimately, it's a bit samey, but if you want to shoot loads of Aliens, this is the game for you. While I would have liked more missions, it's got lots of detail that you can muck about with, surprisingly good characters and voice acting, and options to set yourself new challenges for bonus rewards. If this is the sort of thing you like, then you'll probably like this sort of thing.

That's good to know. There were a couple of times in Oblivion where slaying somebody who'd surrendered ruined the quest. One that springs to mind is the quest to uncover the truth about the Fighter's Guild and the Blackwood Company. I had to beat a guy who'd surrendered into talking but not beat him hard enough to kill him. This made me hesitant to kill anybody surrendering in Skyrim.

Since i beat the story on HZD i've not had any inclination to go back to it, which is a little odd. I'll keep it loaded so that i can get the remaining data points on the Faro Plague story.

I did think of playing Dead Space, but is there any point if a re-release is coming this year?

I bought the Aliens: Fireteam game, Toby. I might have a go when i get back from holiday.

Thought I’d mention this for anybody interested. Daggerfall has been remastered using the Unity engine (unsurprisingly titled Daggerfall Unity) and it looks great. For anybody like me who’s never played it before, it’s free on GOG.com

Today in Skyrim, I killed my first dragon. I found my character emphasis on stealth helped immensely. Whilst the guards fought with swords, I went into sneak mode, ducking and diving through the western watch tower battlements, popping an arrow into it as often as I could. I took a few burns but not enough to kill me. Being in sneak mode doubled the effect of the arrows. I also gained my first shout:)

Good work! I find in all of these games - Fallout included - I tend to default to stealth and sniping. I suspect they would be very difficult if you resolved to just charge in and attack all the time (and probably less interesting). Towards the end of the Oblivion story, I was playing the game a lot like Thief.

After about 30 hours of play, Skyrim crashed on me. I couldn’t get back to the desktop but was able to access a shutdown via ctrl-alt-delete (but couldn’t access task manager to close the game that way). It’s the first time it has happened and hopefully won’t re-occur too often. There has been a recent Windows 11 update so I’m wondering if that is the cause (so far, no more crashes).

On a brighter note, I have now killed 3 dragons (although got killed myself and had to reload a couple of times). I’m quite enjoying the shout power. Unrelenting Force is very handy for dispersing a group of enemies. One of my favourite tricks is to UF a bear at the edge of cliff and watch it fall to its death.

Sometimes I wonder about myself:)

I am currently playing "Dragon Age: Origins", as well as "Cloudpunk". Both of these games are beautiful in their own way.

On a side note, I'm really glad that I have access to this kind of entertainment. As playing video games helps me with worldbuilding new elements of my writing and Web Development projects.

In picked up Wasteland 2 in a GOG.com sale (£5.99). It's a tough one. It's a kind of Fallout 2 clone. I've still got a soft touch for the old isometric perspective. I started a game on Rookie level and struggled for quite a bit of time. Even the cockroaches are tougher than me right now! I'm getting a bit better and starting to make a bit of progress. I'm enjoying it up to a point but I think it's going to be a grind all the way through. I already know that it's a game I'll never finish.

This was me when it came out. I still haven't finished it...

I restarted The Last of Us on the PS4. I don't think it's an exceptional game, so much as a good game with exceptional character development and atmosphere (especially the score). It reminds me of a mixture of Day of the Triffids and Dawn of the Dead, and if written as a novel would be fine, but not ground-breaking. The lead character, Joel, is a video game tough guy but is also a pretty convincing character. There are lots of nice touches, none of them necessary to the plot, that build up character in the story. He's got a way of saying "Yep..." in a reluctant, slightly menacing way that reminds me of Clint Eastwood.

It's a The Road rip-off.

Agreed! For me, the gameplay was decent but clunky at times, and was generally just a method to get from one outstanding cut scene to the next.

I'm currently in the final dungeon of The Legend of Heroes: Trails to Azure. I say 'final dungeon', but it's a Trails game, so there'll probably be at least two more

Also, on Switch, I'm playing Fire Emblem Engage. I've been a Fire Emblem fan since the GBA games (those that were released in the West, at least). I remember I was looking for games like the original X-COMs, and found FE because of that. Whilst I liked the previous Switch entry, Three Houses, I wasn't a big fan of all the social sim stuff they added, so Engage's return to a focus on the combat is much closer to what made me like the games in the first place. I suspect a lot of new players who found the series thanks to Three Houses might be disappointed but I'm very happy.

Getting back into Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous. My initial (and pretty long) run was halted due to a combination of the mid-game feeling a bit less urgent/structured than the early acts and I think something distracted me and broke the habit of playing. Returning to my previous save rather than starting over, liking it once again. It'll be weird when I start a new game as I really rather like my massive dog Weiss (who's pretty handy in combat).
