Nighteyes

I too loved Nighteyes and grieve his death. There were many funny Nighteyes and Fitz part, but i particularly liked their first encounter of eah other and how Nighteyes came to Fitz's aid when he was attacked by the forged ones.

I loved Nighteyes too. He made a fantastic character. He seemed like he was the embodiment of the wisdom and simplicity of nature. Fitz was mired in the human world with all of its many complications, but Nighteyes could see to the barebones of an issue and remind him which was the most important. He wasn't as given to impulse or emotion either. It's true, he really was an "old soul." I think partly because of him, Fitz was able to step back and see the bigger picture.

I was really sad to see him die too. I didn't see that coming. I thought he'd stay throughout the trilogies, for sure. One of my favorite moments is in the Tawny Man trilogy when one of the characters remarks to Fitz that he can "still see the wolf" in Fitz's eyes. Fitz was changed because of his relationship with Nighteyes.

I loved Nighteyes

When he died I sat and over-hugged my poor dog. I think Hobbs describes animals brilliiantly, I never see a cat now without thinking "make a lap".

I tend to get rather attached to any animal characters I read about, and I have to say that it's no different here.:)

Ghost, the direwolf in 'A Game Of Throne,' by GRRM, caught my eye =D

I do not think he can rival Nighteyes for my affection though. *Sighs sadly* Why why why did Nighteyes have to die?!?

I blame Molly:) If she wasn't such a moany, jealous bag, Hobbs would have been able to let Fitz keep him

*Laughs at Jack's answer*

I blame her for the Fool's departure!

Seems like nobody likes Molly! She seems to get the blame for most things here! (Not the best character in the world, though, I must admit...:))

I'm not really fond of Nettle as well; she takes after her mother =D Not that Starling is any better! Patience is the best, the scene when she saw Fitz again made me weep...

I was more fond of The fool, but nighteyes beats them all. When he died i stopped reading for about two days cause i was so mad at Hobb.

I love Nighteyes. He's such an amazingly original and convincing character. I really enjoyed reading his "thoughts", to the extent of not being able to wait reading them whenever I saw italic printed font on the page I was reading. That wolf is friggin funny as hell and made me smile on more occassions than I've bothered to count.

I honestly almost cried my eyes out when he died. I'll never forget those last words to Fitz. It was the single most emotional moment of any book I've ever read. But, seeing as he was already around 15-20 years old, I guess Hobb couldn't keep him alive at that point in the story.

I'll miss him dearly during the last two books of the Tawny Man trilogy, just like Fitz.... I so wish he didn't die!

BTW, anyone know of any books like The Farseer or the Tawny Man, in which animals and humans form special bonds? I'm really interested in reading more in that genre. Any tips would be most welcome!

I loved Nighteyes. I was so sad when he died. My eyes watered and all the letters blurred in front of my eyes, I was almost sobbing.

I think Nighteyes was one of the wisest characters, and he also had the best sense of humor - that dry kind like when he stood on Fitz's hair until he woke up. But all in all, Verity was my favorite, though it didn't bother me when he 'died' so to speak. It was a good ending for him and I'm glad they didn't try to bring him back in the second Fitz trilogy (although that part where Fitz tells Lord Golden about going to see Verity-as-Dragon and not sensing his presence was sad, but really good, as if he was somewhere beyond mortal reach like the place Fitz goes when using the portal stones in the last book)

Well, I had the unusual introduction to Hobb of starting with Fool's Errand, and could see Nighteyes' death coming about halfway thru the book. I liked Nighteyes, too, and am curious to see if Fitz turns up a wolf cub somewhere else along the way (no, no spoilers, and I'm not reading this thread any further until I've at least finished the Tawney Man series:D).

I just finished Fool's Errand tonight, and I loved nighteyes. I didn't actually believe he was dead until it mentioned burning him, and it really didn't properly catch me until he told Starling.

The favourite thing Nighteyes has said for me is, [Fitz]: 'How do the horses look?' [Nighteyes]: 'Delicious'
I laughed, and kept laughing for quite a while.

****SPOILERS****

That one Page in Fools Errand is about the closest a book has ever come to making me sob like a baby, Nighteyes was my favourite character, from any book, ever, knowing Hobbs style I knew from the moment I met Nighteyes it would end in tears, but the way she did it.. he survived,to my amazement, the entire first trilogy, he also survived the fight with the piebalds, all patched up, sound asleep, I think to myself, hey, hes gonna be ok! first book of a new trilogy, he wont die untill the third book, see fitz is already dreamwalking with him, its all going to be ok!

Then you read "But Nighteyes was gone". Stare blankly at the page for 15seconds as it hits you, I actually put the book down, gutted, at like 4am on a work day.. its been over a year since I read it, been searching all over, read many highly rated series, none even compare.

These Characters I love, a genuine sense of loss when one dies and that awful sinking feeling when you finish the very last book and just know you wont read another as good, ever.

Beautiful beautiful Nighteyes. He basically inspired by whole visual arts project at the end of high school. Did a bunch of watercolour drawings/paintings of wolves. Got pretty good marks. So thanks Nighty.
