Official ASoIaF video game in development

I don't think this game is good RPG material.
I'll tlel you why:

In games, you'll always play with people that are not the main character(s).
However, you -want- to be the main character(s).
I don't want to be some pansy unknown Captain of the Guard when I could be Jaime himself. Not some other imp when I could be The Imp. you following me? :)

Wouldn't it be interesting though if you could choose from one of maybe 7 POVs and play through the game as each. What would be even more interesting might be to REQUIRE the completion from each POV in order to get to some final sequence and ultimately win. It would be tough to implement well, of course.

I'm thinking that a RTS game with the ability to interact on a one on one level might be the best way to go. I don't think a FPS would have much appeal, and an MMRPG wouldn't work unless it just recreated the world and din't follow the storyline, which would be a waste of course.

I think any RPG would have to be made on the scale of Baldur's Gate in order to work well - otherwise the company would only be using the worldset and map to give a cast of characters to play.
The more I think about it I would be very surprised if we got an RPG - the core story itself is not finished and any RPG would have to be very extensive to work wel.

Those are problems!

Players want maximum flexibility, which is difficult unless the game is non linear, and so, its not the story. It is not a movie. They want to be THE IMP, and not everyone can be Tyrion. If one doesn't use the characters or the storyline, then errm, why pay the huge liscencing costs and the royalties. Just for the map and the look and feel?

Also, I have no idea about GRRM, but the owner of the IP usually wants some degree of control, and there is nothing like that to extend production costs then having a lot of interference with the game creation before, during and after. But you can understand because you don't want, I don't know, something in the game that would spoil it. Let's say, dragons that chew bubblegum. Music that is a bad match. Tyrion with a machine gun, well, maybe.

For all we know it might end up being something like...

A Song of Ice and Fire - Tales of a Hedge Knight

"Create your own vagabond knight and choose which side of the conflict to take. Will you side with the rebel Starks, the treasonous Lannisters or settle for the lawful King Stannis? Will you rise through the ranks after each battle and claim a place by your king's side? Or will your actions on the battlefield earn you mistrust and place you on the frontline of the next battle? Compete in tourneys to win your Lord's favour or choose your fighting style and become a heavily armed warrior or a lightly armoured outrider in dozens of large battles and hundreds of random encounters. One Realm, Five Kings, Total WAR.

Okay so I stole that last line from Medieval 2: Total War, but honestly I'd rather play that game than just play through the POV character's storylines.

Let's face it, those of you who say you actually want to BE the Imp. May I ask why, in a videogame? You can probably count the number of people the Imp kills in battle on two hands. Now obviously you can say "well it doesn't have to be ALL fighting" but really, most of it does. If you ship a game with 10% violence and 90% talking then people will complain. RPGs let you choose mostly but with Tyrion there would be no choice. And I certainly do not want to see a total disregard to the lore and see a game where you play as Tyrion or Jaime and you run around killing thousands of people and completing quests. It has to stick to the story, and we all know what happens to Tyrion and Jaime. They spend half their time in various captivity and most of the other half talking and scheming.

Another thing to remember is that the game will be shipped worldwide to a large audience. That means most of the people they will try and get to play it will not have read the series because the number of people who play video games and read the series will be too small an audience for them. Therefore it has to attract the people who just want to play a game and have never heard of ASOIAF. How can you attract them if you are just playing through Ned's chapters of AGOT, or even Arya's?

This is why I'm thinking we will only interact with the main characters, not play as them. I actually want this because I think it would be a MUCH better game. Playing as the Imp, Jaime, Ned, Arya, Sansa, Catelyn, Brienne, Cersei, Dany, even Jon, would NOT be interesting enough. Jon maybe but still, he kills very little people.

Of course, I could be wrong. But dammit if there is one thing I know its what makes a bad video game! I've played too many disappointments in my experience and a game centered around the POV character's of this book would be just that - a disappointment.

Right, where do I pre-order?

Confess to never having a big interest in those games. I admire GRRM and ASOIF but even if they were to put out a Malazan game based on Erikson's world I still wouldn't purchase.

Strange I know as I work in I.T. and spend plenty of time online researching authors and hanging out at Chrons.

Oooh, I'd like a Malazan PC game. Imagine, you could be a Claw assassin, or a cadre mage, or a crazy sapper, or even perhaps a tiste andii warrior!

Hurrah! RTS and RPG for PC and consoles is excellent news.

Bags the Hound.

Good luck to Cyanide. Hard not to disappoint. Hard to do. Hope its great!

On GRRM's Not A Blog...

Cool stuff coming in from Cyanide Studios on the videogame too. Can't share that either. Sorry, sorry.

That's cool, because Explorer could not find Cyanide's webpage last week.

Why could I not find their website? I'm not a complete Luddite, am I?

I used the advanced search feature of Google, putting GRRM in the mus contain line, and CYanide Studips in the must contain complete word or phrase line.

As for being a complete Luddite, keep practcing and who knows, you may yey achieve perfection.

No, you're not a Luddite.
