Blog of Ice and Fire

Okay, to further defend Bran: he's a little kid, his parents were brutally killed, his brother was brutally killed, the only family he has left is Rickon, who is still a toddler (and who whines a lot), his home was over-run by someone he grew up with (Theon), and he has essentially lost everything that he ever cared about. All as a little kid.

I think Bran is entitled to some violins and whining. It wouldn't be a real story if he didn't whine a lot.

And Wert is 100% correct.

I never said he wasn't important to the story. He's just boring. Sorry, I don't find being inside the mind of a whiny eight year to be all that interesting no matter how important his character arc may be. He's got no personality and his chapters are no fun to read. I guess I don't feel like I have to love every single bit of everything GRRM does to still feel like I'm a fan of the series ;).

Agreed, Viz. Regardless of what his future is, Bran is a whiny little jerk. "Oh I can't walk, wah wah wah". I find the Bran chapters the most boring in the entire series. It's always some vague blabbing about Jojen giving stupid dreams which, wihle true, just offputting. I can't quite place my finger on it. It's not like the other dream visions. I thought Dany's vision was very cool.

Bran's whining did get on my nerves, and although i didnt find them boring, i did get frustrated by them. just inching along. hurry up and find that crow already! lol. but i guess thats the appeal.

Like in the real world, ASoIaF's Bran is good for you (and possibly necessary); your enjoyment as you benefit is a secondary issue.

(The only difference I can see is that in ASoIaF, you have to go through the Bran, while in real life.... ;)

And now can we expect remarks about what Bran's rough age is in the various books?)

LOL. Yeah, jerky kid, defenestrated and all. How dare he?

Was Bran really that bad? For a 8-year old kid that got thrown out of a four-storey window, almost dying, waking up from his coma disabled and finding out that most of his family had gone away during that time, hearing of his parents' and older brother's deaths without seeing them again, and getting betrayed by his father's ward among other terrible things that has happened to him, I don't think he's too whiny at all. Yeah, he's not Arya but who is? At least he hasn't done anything to betray his family and has tried to put all he learned from his father about ruling to good use. I think he's done extremely well for an 8 or 9-year old in his situation.

Maybe it's because I've only read the books once so his POVs are still fresh, but I didn't find him too whiny at all. I've seen grown men whine more over smaller things than him - like the whining here about Bran being whiny. ;)

Hey, if I'd been through what Bran's been through I'd probably be a big whiner, too. My only point is that I don't want to read about it because it's not interesting to read. I wouldn't want to let people into my thoughts unless I was doing something cool like Arya or even Sansa and Catelyn! If my only thoughts were, "boohoo i won't be a knight!" and people were forced to read about it then I would expect those people to get sick of hearing about it even I'm justified in my complaints.

Alright, as fun as this is I think I'll drop it for now. It's clear that Bran lovers won't have their minds changed and they certainly aren't going to change mine. Seriously though, I can't wait until we have a new book to discuss so we can find something new to have petty arguments about :).

Bran could do a Luke Skywalker and go from whining and annoying to kind of cool in the end. And who knows, with this 3 eyed crow he could be more powerful than a Jedi.
(Sorry)
Back on the topic: this guy seems to have a decent sense for the story and is picking up things well. His blog is enjoyable.

I'm guessing that GRRM intends to pay for the investment he expects of us as readers with the Bran chapters. I didn't mind them. He's been good at paying off on early promises. So I'll expect later on for the Bran chapters to pick up.

Still, some of my best memories of A Storm of Swords are when Bran is listening to the story about the tourney at Harrenhal. That was storytelling at its finest.

It has been funny so far, but the last blog in particular seemed like he was starting to try to hard. He went overkill.

The humor is just a bonus so if it's off I don't really mind. It's more interesting to see how he reacts to what he's reading and the connections he's making and whether they are on the right track or not. Yeah, all of that.

I agree that the last entry was a bit off. After so many other good ones, I'm inclined to pass it off as just a bad day. I just hope he's not trying to clown around for the sake of the readers too much.

Damn! I knew I should have posted here that the blog is back.

There have only been five entries (with two chapters each, making ten chapters done), so it'll take no time to catch up. The blogger is still coming up with those witty comparisons, for example:
Jon wears gloves to hide his burned hand. He should wear one shiny glove like Michael Jackson, because they have so much in common already. Both had troubled childhoods, both are kind of emo, and both were ambivalent about being black.
(From the latest blog entry.)

To make it easy to find, he's merely carrying on from the original AGOT, starting with:
