James P Blaylock

I've read Homunculus, Lord Kelvin's Machine and The Last Coin out of his books, I do intend to read more sometime. They were all entertaining reads, I think The Last Coin was the best. He does have a lot of similarities to Powers, although he tends to be more whimsical (at least in the books I've read).

Thanks williamjm. I have ordered Homunculus from the library. So I'll try to read that soon.

The Elfin Ship and its sequel The Disappearing Dwarf are fun, but not typical of his other work. If you find that you don't like it, you might still want to try some of the other books mentioned in this thread.

What about Land of Dreams? I have had a copy sitting in my library for ages but I am yet to read it.

It's supposed to be similar to Elfin Ship and The Disappearing Dwarf.

Anyone read this?

It's more like his later books, but parts of it are reminiscent of The Elfin Ship. I has that sense that if you look at the ordinary a little bit aslant you'll see something bizarre and extraordinary that marks his best works.

Thanks Teresa. I dont' think I've never read any of Blaylock's ouevre except maybe a couple a short stories from one of the steampunk anthologies, so this should prove an interesting exercise.

I've made a note of The Paper Grail as well.
