If you haven't read it already, try Peter V. Brett'sThe Painted Man. The first in a trilogy, I was spellbound by this book. I have the second book, The Desert Spear, in my trolley and can't wait to get my grubby little paws on it.
To Ride Hell's Chasm by Janny Wurts is my personal favourite kick-ass standalone. Nice, big beefy book, a lot of intrigue, distinct characters, and then halfway through the intrigue shifts into a high-gear thriller until almost the last page. All in one book.

I'd like to second Child of an Ancient City by Tad Willians and Nina Kiriki Hoffman. Others I would suggest are:
Illustrated Man by Ray Bradbury,
Last Dragon by J.M. McDermott,
To Reign In Hell by Steven Brust,
Bridge of Birds by Barry Hughart,
Thomas the Rhymer by Ellen Kushner,
Fire & Hemlock by Dianna Wynne Jones,
Dreamsnake by Vonda McIntyre.
