And in Fantasy, I agree with t'others, it don't warrant any explanation, just let it happen....and if you want to tell the sex of a chromosome, just look up its genes.

I don't know if this has been said ( so many replies aleady!)

But I would think that if the mechanisms of the mating were similar to human/human then little explanation would be needed, though it does depend on whether your story falls into Sci-Fi or Fantasy.

But really, the world understands boy+girl=baby. As long as your story is strong enough to support interspecies relations, then no further explanation will be neccesary.

Thank you. There is some magic involved with the species anyway (as a genetic 'feature', as such), so this could work really well...
