Dragon Keeper

I really need to put the SF Masterworks down from time to time and at least walk into a bookshop again, I hadn't even heard of this one until it was brought up in another thread. I'll definitely be reading them at some point but I could understand it if they're not up to expectations, that'll be the 10th book in the six dutchies universe. I wonder if the Soldier Son Trilogy was a deliberate attempt to take a quick break before returning to the six dutchies (or whatever the whole world is called).

The Six Duchies is Fitz's part of the world. I don't think we're ever told what the world is actually called, but people always refer to the books as being set in the Realm of the Elderlings.

Saying that, the RotE could just be the continent that everything is currently set on.

I have to say, I enjoyed Dragon Keeper more than the soldier son trilogy. Definitely looking forward to Dragon Haven which is supposed to be released in the spring of 2010.

Certainly I don't recall ever hearing of a name for the whole world that Fitz live on - just the contient and outlying islands in the Farseer books. The Liveships books describe and expand on things - taking us far further south, though still mostly mated to the main landmass - though there are hints at lands further south still (the land from where Fool came from) as well as descriptions of vast deserts and dragon graveyards from the memories of the dargons in the Liveships books.

As for Dragon Keeper I have not got very far (keep getting distracted when reading at home so I never get much done at all sadly) but the starting does feel a little - hollow. If think Hobb is a fantastic writer for getting into the mind and speaking from the perspective of a single protagonist - but when she has to branch out into a disconected 3rd person she can get a little out of he water - I think it comes from her style being one of heavy desription of the character and then havin to cut a lot of that away when she shifts to the 3rd person - thus giving a bit of a hollow feel to the writing at times.

edit - and don't forget that chances are the dragons and elderlings explored most of the world - and they had those black teleportation stones as well. Though certainly the main continent which all the series have been based in thus far, appears to be the main society for both the dragons and the elderlings. Suggesting that whilst they might have branched out in the past, that they never really colonised or took root in other nations (especailly true I think of the dragons). If they did it might only have been the lower classes (the regular humans) who formed the major numbers of the colonies and thus were not able or willing to return to retake things

Loved this book even if the ending seemed a bit abrupt. Almost felt like it just stopped in the middle of a chapter. Looking forward to the next one! And yeah, I enjoyed this far more than the two Soldier Son books I read.

I think it was supposed to be one book, but was too big so they divided it in two. Really an improvement over the Soldier Son books imo.

Now reading David Weber's Storm From the Shadows. I really like the political, sneaky aspects of his books, but not so much the battles.

I enjoyed Dragon Keeper especially after the disappointment of the Solder Son trilogy. However, as mentioned by others, it was quite clearly half a book and it seemed at times an awful long time before all the main characters came together for the journey. Now I really can't wait until March for the next volume. My daughter and a friend are waiting for this second volume before they'll even read Dragon Keeper.

March of next year in the UK. Who knows how long it will take to reach the US.

I will be ordering from Amazon.Uk...not too bad...works out to be around the Retail book store price when its all said and done $35.00

I lost interest a few chapters in, and I absolutely adored the previous works. Looks like Hobb's stories for me have lost their lustre. No doubt I'll give it another go sometime, though.
