Dust of Dreams

Copies just arrived here which means you should be getting them by end October Rosemary I'm guessing.

I'm 4/5ths of the way through dod. Totally awesome.a few things though. Who are the nahruk/caste? Were they mentioned b4? I got the impression they had robotic legs or mounts? Am I crazy?

But seriously.... Undead jaghut murder squad workin 4 wjack?sweet!

Do all the forkrul assail have the destructive voice ability? Or is that girl in the snake unique? I got the impression she copied the skill from them.

I'm not sure where they are mentioned exactly but the Nahruk are the former slave class bred by the Matrons to build for the Che'malle, they are the creators of the sky keep's such as Rakes keep in Gardens of the Moon and they rebelled against the Che'Malle in the past. They're similar to the Che'malle hunters but with short tails, (I think) can't remember any robotic legs so you're p[robably crazy;)

Not sure about the Fokrul, the only mentions of the voice ability have been in DoD as far as i remember and i think there'll be more to come from Baddalle and Co. in the next book

I look forward to you're take on the climax of DoD, awesome IMO:eek:

The Nah'Ruk are the short-tails made by the Long-tails (Che'Malle) when they where at the height of their power. I had the impression, they made the Nah'Ruk to achieve 'perfection' or something like that in one of the previous books. Instead the Nah'Ruk rebbelled and went to war against the Che'Malle for reason imo still unknown.
(Maybe the Nah'Ruk where a failed experiment, i don't really know. First i heard of them being the slaves class either.)

The whole Forkrul thing was confusing indeed. We always heard about them being these amazing fighters. And now they where suddenly getting whooped all over the place. Wasn't Karsa defeated by a Forkrul in the beginning of his adventure. And now, suddenly their strenght seems almost average? The whole children travelling in the 'what i presume was icarium's warrens' was confusing too.

I'm still wondering who will be most formidable. Quick Ben who overlapped the old and the new warrens. or Grub and Sinn who where using the new warrens on their own.

(Maybe the Nah'Ruk where a failed experiment, i don't really know. First i heard of them being the slaves class either.)

I don't know why but that's the impression I've always had, that they were 'created' as builders and were looked on as a lower class than the Che'malle, they 'rebelled' against the Matrons and now despise the Che'malle and are out to destroy them all.
Again I may be wrong, but that was how i thought things were

I didn't think that the Fokrul have been diminished, the ones chasing the snake of children (were they tiste children?) were severly weakened and defeated by magic of a kind. The other ones were beaten by the watch, who is obviously tougher than he seems

Also Karsa was beaten when he was young, arrogant and caught off guard

Hmm, iMo they have been diminisched somewhat. Where before everyone Forkrul seemed like a powerhouse, now it seems more that there are exceptional strong ones, and normal ones, like with every other race.

the Watch is stronger than your average man, given that he also beat those Tiste Liosan with ease. However that particular Forkrul did not seem all that much, given the way it was subseguently defeated by those 3 'whatsinanamewithclubs' whom follow the husband of Sandalath Drukorlat.

what do you think about the children being tiste? I think they're probably liosan as they were chased by the fokrul, if so it seems that the liosan have been severly weakend as a race/factor in the events to come.

Never thought about that. I'm not sure how it would fit with the Liosan homeworld which seems to be almost inaccessible to others. Given the devastation of that world i'm assuming something then must also have happened to greyfrog and by extension L'Oric. If it was indeed the Liosan Homeworld. And that is not a thing i just see happening without any mention.

Other things i have against it being the homeworld of the Liosan, is that i'm assuming they live in a world of pure light, like the Andii live/lived in a world of pure darkness. Also the liosan are described as hot-tempered. The opposites of the Andii whom are apathetic. And those children seem to be quite apathetic, instead of hot-tempered. Then their is the fact, that while the Liosan have closed themselves of to the outer world, they do seem to posses knowledge of the other races. meaning they would have recognised that the ones hunting them where Forkrul, not 'adults'.

I'm not sure anymore how the children are described physically. that might provide some clues. other things that might help your theory, is the fact that they the children seem to walk in a certain hierarchy, and the fact that one Liosan refers to their language as The Language of Purity.

PS: whilst typing this up, i realized, that i have forgotten the details of the interactions between the Children, and the ones hunting them. (Adults, ...). How they think of the ones they left behind, on their tails. Secondly based on my vague memory ;
(those passages weren't my favorites--> just figured Erikson would eventually reveal the truth about all the vagueness, and was too bothered to really try at the moment and truly look beneath the surface, given the fact that i was at the time more interested in other parts of the book, and that erikson at times writes passages which you'll only be able to understand at a later date anyways.) ;
i recall that they referred to themselves as children, and the ones pursuing them as adults. perhaps there is a connection betweem the two. As shown by the fact that one of them was able to learn the language. Some kind of Forkrul offspring, mutation, ... . Like humans are somewhat connected to the Imass.

The line that mixed me up was- your eyes shall find them shortly. They are ....mounted.
On what?
Wrought... legs.to match our own. Tireless.
Somehow I got robotic legs from that. I don't know.

Otoh the watch must be incredibly tough.I'd like to see him square off with karsa or dasseem

Another thing. a few books back when dead hedge was wandering the warrens(I think it was him or maybe ganoes paran) he saw a frozen throne in one of the realms. This is hood right? Why did he thaw out? was this just his mortal body? While his ascended form guarded the gate? Is that the throne of death? Why isn't wiskeyjack parked in it or all the bridgeburners for that matter? Ah madness I say!!

SPOILER ALERT.................

OK I'm devastated, completely distraught, death I can accept, although with Erikson is not a handicap to getting on in the world. Bonehunters nearly decimated not a problem they'll likely ascend but then I thought, Bottle :( Quickben  I wanted them till the end, then even worse Fiddler has gone, even if he comes back he won't be the Fiddler I know and love.. Still I've convinced myself that Bottle has soul shifted, Quickben was knocked into one of his warrens and liikely decided to have a nap. Brys has likely managed to save a dozen or so including Fiddler, the next emperor of the Malazan empire( I am allowed to dream)

What more can I say apart from roll on The Crippled God, I want to read it now. Suppose I'll have to reread the whole series to refresh my memory gaps and to ease my withdrawal symptoms.

They way i read it most bonehunters probably made it through. Bottle took control of the Forkrul assassin. And isn't Grub going to become the next emperor? After Jhistal that is.

That's a long time to dream Nixie! :)

Only a little way to go till I have finished Dust of Dreams, then I shall be dreaming too!

i got the impression that the frozen throne was the throne of omtrose phellack? i suppose that could have been another throne that hood occupied what with him being jaghut and all, as for the bridgeburners i kinda thought that they were guardians of a sort rather than actually "ruling" that warren. does it not say that there is now nobady to accept the souls and that the gods would now have to claim their own??

I'm thinking the throne of omtose phellack and the throne of death may be the same. He is dead though. In any case the Bridgeburners guard the gates of death. And the Gods will from now on indeed have to take care of there own, or nobody from now on will be taken care off.

There's a bit in the Adventures of Bauchelain and Korbal Broach that discusses the Forkrul Assail. I don't have it to hand, but I think it talked about how some of the older ones were champions and given specific names. Something like that. Maybe someone with the book could find out.

hmm i have 2 of the books will dig them out and have a gander, nothing springs to mind thou!

I am nearly finished DOD and to be honest I ahve found it the most difficult to read. Normally I will read one of Erikson's books in about two to three days and then go back for a more leisurely read a few weeks later. This time round it has taken me about a month to get through the first 500 pages.
