Books worth buying when just released

My list of, "I must have the new book"

Jim Butcher
Julie Czerneda
Lois Bujold
Patrick Rothfuss
William Gibson
Sharon Lee + Steve Miller

And the various nice edition collections by

NESFA (Zelazny,Bob Shaw,Gordon Dickson etc..)

There are quite a few authors where I bought their most recent book when it first came out in hardcover (or very soon after):

George RR Martin
Guy Gavriel Kay
Tim Powers
Steven Erikson
Ken Macleod
Richard Morgan
Scott Lynch
Joe Abercrombie
J.V. Jones
Vernor Vinge
Peter F Hamilton
Steph Swainston

In most cases I'd probably buy in hardback their next book as well, although if the book really didn't sound interesting I might not, for example I'd probably buy any new Vorkoskigan book by Lois McMaster Bujold but I've avoided her most recent fantasy series because it didn't sound that good and got terrible reviews.

For a while I used to buy the new Feist book as well when it came out, but I've given up in the last couple of years due to a run of mediocrity.

There are a few authors whose work I rush out to buy, but not many:

Alastair Reynolds
Iain Banks (though this may change: he's out of ideas, methinks)
William Gibson
China Mieville
Ken MacLeod

Joe Abercrombie may join the list - I'm a latecomer to his stuff, but really enjoyed the First Law trilogy and BSC, and will probably start getting his stuff as and when it's released. Ditto Pat Rothfuss.

Planning on grabbing (unless it's totally impossible) Oath of Fealty, the New Elezibeth Moon Paksenarrion book. That's March 2010 (projected).

And, the New Dresden book Changes scheduled for April 2010.

Ooooooo ... I had no idea that Paks #4 was actually in the works, just that Moon wanted to revisit her at some point. I see it's the first of another three book series, and that Paks seems to be a minor character in this one.

I'll buy certain authors in Hardback now. (Alastair Reynolds and Iain M. Banks specifically). I used to get a lot of hardback books (mostly as part of the SF & F book club), but this was too expensive and impracticle as with the exception of a few great books, they'd be left on the shelves and not re read at all.

I do collect the Star Wars Hardbacks though.

Well, Riselka I can't pretend that the little we know doesn't slightly concern me in a way. The novels take place in the Paks universe, but are not really about Paks. The Paksinarrion novels are some of my favorite over all reads, yet I didn't care a lot for the "background" novels on Gird and Luap, so we'll see. I want to tread lightly here, I love Paks, but haven't been able to get into Moon's space operas and Moon's co-authored efforts either, so.... I really hope that the next trilogy is as good as Pak's story. Though I wonder even as I say that do I have the right to be so critical?

If Ms. Moon were to see this I'd like to end it by again saying that The Paks trilogy is (I think of it as 1 novel) among my top 5 favorite novels of all time.

Brian Jaques was the only author I've ever chased out and bought hard covers. Can't really afford it anymore.

I do have 30 or so, hardcovers by Dumas but they're all second hand...
