Your latest weird, scary, nice, amazing, mundane etc. dream

A good point yourself as sleep deprivation has been known to cause hallucinations and other mental problems (though not on a permanent basis to the best of my knowledge).

Sleep depravation actually increases my imaginative potential. On the flip-side, however, is the fact that I seldom have the energy to put the good ideas down in hard-copy when in that state of being :(

i have a dream that i havn't had in around 2 years but was a very reoccurring one: its the classic "runaway" dream where me and my lil bro are running away from a stranger, but we dont move anywhere and i stop to fight him while my bro gets away.

oh, another on is where i start off on land, go into the sea (i always breath under water) and im attacked my a frikin massive shark.

lol and the other day i dreamed i was some sort of tranformer-autobot-big-daddy-giant-mech-thing, and i was totally kicking bad robot ass! was awesome

i also fully believe my dreams, i once actually woke up believing that my whole family was dead. i was understandably pleased when my mum came in. and dieing in dreams is funny, when im dead i always get this "whoooshing" sensation/sound as if im traveling at massive speeds in darkness

Based on an ultra-realistic waking dream, fuelled by migraine medication, I’ve come up with the following outline. Parts of it are horribly clichéd/derivative/not thought through, but as I really don’t need another storyline kicking around in my head just now I thought I might be able to purge it (so it doesn’t demand attention) by setting it down.

  • Terraforming is in progress on a distant planet. Atmospheric convertors have been established along the equator (think the big structures from ‘Aliens’) but the oxygen content is still too low for unassisted breathing.

  • Other than brooding clouds, lightning storms and torrential downpours, surface conditions are tolerable and the workforce can go about wearing just facemask-type oxygen concentrators (‘rebreathers’). They have a pressurised habitat which serves as their off-duty living quarters, medical facility, site office, etc.

  • The workforce are engaged in second stage construction - roads, foundations and utilities – ahead of the colonists proper. The place is one big building site running three shifts round the clock.

  • The station commander (main character) learns that the entire supply of recharge units for the rebreathers are sub-standard, and cannot cope with existing atmospheric conditions. A resupply mission would take at least two weeks to reach them and they have no means of evacuation.

  • To save on cost the habitat life support is limited and can only support two-thirds of the station personnel at any one time – it being assumed the other third will be outdoors working.

  • He alerts his corporate superiors to the problem but then real-time (faster-than-light) communications shut down. Investigation reveals this was a deliberate act, triggered from off-world, to prevent any news of this potential disaster undermining investor confidence back on Earth.

  • For anyone to survive until a resupply/rescue mission reaches them, a third of the personnel must be ‘removed’ from the roster. “You’re talking sixty-four men and women. Seventy to be on the safe side.”

  • While he agonises over the decision a riot breaks out. News of the problem has leaked and the rumour is the entire third shift will be sacrificed. In the spirit of ‘if I’m going then I’m taking you all with me’ the life support modules are wrecked beyond repair.

  • Most of the workforce die, leaving only a handful of survivors from high-altitude backgrounds who can exist using the sub-standard rebreathers. While awaiting rescue the main character begins a romantic relationship with one of the (female) security staff (feisty, kick-ass, of more use in a fight than he is).

  • The rescue mission arrives but it soon becomes clear this is actually a team of mercenaries, designed to ensure the whole workforce can be portrayed as lost due to some plausible natural disaster.

  • Due to the apparent lack of survivors the mercenaries don’t bother to deploy their bioweapon and the good guys are able to sabotage it.

  • A desperate battle then ensues between the survivors (local knowledge, heavy machinery and improvised weapons) and the mercenaries (heavily-armed professionals). This conflict rages through the station and nearby atmospheric processor, with losses on both sides.

  • The only people left standing are the MC, his new girlfriend and the wounded mercenary co-pilot (who the MC has saved). They struggle to escape as the battle-damaged atmospheric processor goes into meltdown, with the mercenary suffering a change of heart and waiting for them (I know, I know, this bit is pure ‘Aliens’ meets ‘Pitch Black’).

  • Fleeing the planet they head back to Earth and an uncertain reception.

Obviously I’ve watched too many SF films over the years and bits of plot have finally coalesced into this terrible hybrid! Either that or its old 1930’s plane-crash movies (Dakota makes forced landing and has only enough fuel left to take off again with fewer passengers as the head-hunters/dinosaurs/lava flow closes in) transposed to a SF setting.

Had a dream where I was with a group of friends at a party, going through all the records and CDs looking for one by The Byrds... and not finding one. Hmmm...

Reminds me of a recurring dream Phillip K Dick reported having, where he kept going through a stack of pulp sf magazines. He was looking for a story called 'The Empire Never Ended' and, on some level he couldn't explain, was simultaneously terrified of finding it.

'The Empire Never Ended'

Wasn't this another reality in The Man in the High Castle?

I recently dreamed I inherited a vast house. The lavatory was in the centre of what looked like a cathedral nave, so you can imagine how big the rest of it was. The only problem was that it was infested with druids. Try as I might, wherever I looked there was a robed bloke with a sickle and a beard. What can it mean?

The psychiatrist is in.

What can it mean?

You fear that despite your efforts to educate yourself and absorb the huge wealth of centuries of culture available to you, your tastes will never mature beyond toilet humour and Asterix the Gaul.

5c please.

I have a recurring dream about being chased over the edge of a cliff by a herd of shopping trollys!

That actually happened to me :D I ended up at the bottom of the cliff with all those shopping trolleys on top of me and I suddenly thought, "Hold on! There's at least a euro in each one of them! I'm rich!!!! Beyond my wildest imaginings!!!!" and then I woke up with a cat clawing my face and saying "Are you going to feed me any time this week or what?" And then I realised I was still asleep and woke up thinking, "I haven't fed the cats yet. I wonder where I left their dinner." And then I remembered. It's in one of those shopping trolleys!! So I climbed out from under the trolleys and started searching and then I realised, "Hold on, the shopping trolleys was a dream!" and then I woke up and I was in the kitchen, where I'd dozed off while making breakfast. So I opened a tin of cat food and put it in the microwave and put a one euro coin in the slot and the trolley started to heat the cat's dinner.

A normal day.

Yep, think so. It went on to inform a lot of his later, post-supernatural vision/nervous breakdown (take your pick) stuff, such as Valis and Radio Free Albamuth. He, er, 'worked out' that Rome's power (Or at least its mentality) never crumbled, but lived on through the ages, even into Nixon's Presidency.

Personally, I think some dodgy cheese at the back of Phil's fridge was to blame here.

Well, this one was quite a while back, but it's the latest dream I can remember with any clarity.

The Earth has gone through an apocalypse after a strange species of wasp-like aliens invade. Survivors band together into guerilla squadrons against the planet's new masters.

I am the leader of such a band of four. We have been surviving pretty well until one day a member of my squad reveals himself to be one of the evil wasp aliens. (For some reason the evil wasps looked a lot like the red wasp creatures from FFX.)

The strangest part was, I immediately changed into a green wasp and battled the red. It was just at the end of the fight when I woke up.

Last night I dreamt I was a member of the IRA (I kept referring to it as The Troubles to everyone in the dream that followed this one -- you know, in that way that you sometimes talk about dreams within dreams). Me and some IRA friends were running away from soldiers along a country lane type place. I was doing that dream running where I was going in slow motion. The soldiers were right behind me, so I dived around a corner oh so slowly but I was too slow and the soldiers saw me and held up their guns about to shoot...
