MythosCon

Yes, I've heard about this one now and again; I'd love to go, but I seriously doubt my ability to do so within that space of time. However, it does sound as if it's going to be quite a gathering, and I hope it does well enough to become a regular thing....

I will absolutely be attending. Great Yuggoth -- if everyone attends that has given Adam signs of interest -- this thing is going to be the Lovecraftian event of the Century!

Yeah, it'll be great. Now, if only they can allow foreigners to pay their fees as well...

Congratulations, Martin! *sigh* Now, if only there were some way I could manage to attend the darned thing.....:(

Ah, well... maybe there'll be another.....

This is going to be a wonderful con, even if this first one has a small attendance. Any opportunity to get together with S. T. Joshi in a convention-type setting is worthwhile, and one that is devoted exclusively to Lovecraft will give him an opportunity to shine. Not only does he know everything about Lovecraft, he seems to have it all memorized. The convention is the inspiration of Mythos novelist, Adam Niswander. I got Adam into contact with S. T., and the result has been that since then Hippocampus has published two of Adam's fascinating novels. Adam loves the Mythos big-time and wants to help inspire and support new modern Mythos writers, and this convention is one way he hopes to do so.

I was never able to attend the NecronomiCon in Providence. The closest I get to a Lovecraft convention is The H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival & CthulhuCon. The "CthulhuCon" was added because, over the past few years, my friends and I have been actively bringing more and more writers to the event. It is a great gathering, but because I'm a literary guy, I want a convention that is almost completely devoted to Lovecraft's tales and the Mythos works he has inspired, so MythosCon is exactly what I need. Oh, how I love to gather with hundreds of Lovecraftians! I always come away from such events overflowing with energy for the writing of new Mythos books. I'm glad this year seems to be speeding by, because I am becoming more and more excited about this convention. Hopefully this will be the first of many!

I finally booked my hotel room and paid for my flight. Phoenix, here I come! :)

So far there are but 88 registered members, which seems awfully wee to me. Hopefully there will be a rush come year's end. I think the chances of MythosCon being a success and continuing will depend significantly on the success of this first one. I urge all Lovecraft fans who can possibly attend to do so. We haven't had a real full-fledged convention devoted to H. P. Lovecraft since the ill-starred NecronomiCon that happened every other year in Providence. I've grown bored attending most cons because all I really want to discuss is HPL and ye Mythos and those of us who are writing new Lovecraftian fiction. Last WFC I was on a panel concerning Wizards, and although it was fun I felt bored that it wasn't about HPL, although I talked about Lovecraft's wizards and queried S. T. Joshi, who was in the audience. I want conventions and events that are utterly focused on H. P. Lovecraft. The H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival and CthulhuCon is great, but I usually spend most of my time there talking with writings and ignoring the films. MythosCon will be an event for writers first and foremost, I think, and for those of us who read Mythos fiction. I expect it to be amazing. It is always such a pleasure to be around Ramsey Campbell, who is utterly delightful; and it is so amazing to listen to Laird Barron talk about writing, the genre, and feel his deep love for weird fiction and his deep knowledge concerning it. And I am always hypnotized when I hear Michael Shea read, because he is so gifted. I'll finally get to meet Kevin Ross, whose Chaosium manual Kingsport--City in the Mist or whatever it's called has been so fundamental in inspiring my tales of Kingsport; and I'll meet the incredible Lovecraft scholar Ken Faig Jr., whose Hippocampus book is a must-read. And Michael Cisco, who I hear is absolutely fascinating as a speaker and reader. Ann K. Schwader, one of our finest weird poets, will be there. Great Yuggoth, it's going to be awesome.

Yes... if there were some way I could arrange time off, as well as putting some other things in order, I'd dearly love to be there... but too many factors mitigate against it this time 'round. I certainly hope it is a success, as I too would love to see this become a regular event... and, I hope, eventually become a regular attendee....

LOL!:D Enjoy your trip, Martin; hope you have a very good time not only at the con itself, but while you are here in America in general....

Thanks -- I always have so far! :)

(But I have never travelled this far -- the flight will be a killer... Hence I will arrive on the 4th, so I will have some time to work on my jetlag)

88? That's like a well-attended Swecon (Swedish national SF convention).:p I'm sure we'll hit 100 before the end of the year; I know at least one guy who will be there who hasn't registered yet.

Just had an email from Lois Gresh, who will have a book published by Arkham House in 2011, and she has expressed interest in attending, which would be so rad. Had an email from Adam who is determined it's going to be a great con but is a little disappointed by the lack of response from artists and fears there won't be an art show, which would be sad. I am getting super-psyched about it!:D:D:D:cool:

Wilum: which artists will be attending? Perhaps some promotion on various sites with such information stated (rather than links provided) might get things rolling a bit more....

The only known artist that I recognize in the list of attending members is Allen Koszowski. Some of the guys from Chaosium will be there, so I had hoped that would have inspired Chaosium artists to attend, or some of those talents whose works have been reproduced in Artists Inspired by H. P. Lovecraft (Centipede Press) or The Art of H. P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos (Fantasy Flight Games) or The Haunter of the Dark: and Other Grotesque Visions (John Coulthart). We still have over half a year for people to register, but that time will fly by quickly. Those of we professionals who are attending are determined to make this convention an awesome and fun experience, a real celebration of everything Mythos! But we need the fans there, and the artists, and more writers.

I'd like to see some of these stories done in full color artwork so long as the story was first reviewed.

The Fantasy Flight artworks if good but it is of a more serious mood. I wouldn't mind talking to some artists, just to express some ideas or concepts, but yeah, I'd take whatever they put out I guess. I'd like to see something like "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" as a graphic novel. I would buy them all. I used to play a few role playing games quite a few years ago, but these days I'm not involved in it. I know that those game modules are being made still, but it looks like the Conan crowd is moving faster.
