I just finished; All you need is Kill.
The time loop idea was interesting. The ending was a surprise and handled very well.
I wasn't that impressed with the rest of the novel.
I'm not sure that even the author quite understood how the time loop scenario works.
If the enemy Mimics invented it and use it to help them win battles I question why they kept losing day after day?
Easy and quick to read. Nothing wrong with the first person, past tense writing style.
If I had to point out one thing in particular I'd say it was bland. Not filling.
I'm glad I read it but I doubt I'll ever go back read it again.
On the front cover John Scalzi is quoted as saying about the story "SF for the adreneline junkie. Reads fast, kicks ass and keeps on coming. Buckle up and enjoy."
I'm afraid I didn't get anything like John's view from the story.
I found it just plodded along unitl the final chapter, when finally it perks up and gets interesting.
Then it's all over.
It's funny how Red 13 thought it was fast paced and I did not.
But that's just because we all read and imagine stories in different ways I guess.
My idea of fast paced, adrenalised action MilSF would be David Gunn's Death's Head.
