To #space#, or not to #space#?

alrite n. a ceremony in which a pitiful transgressor is hit hard on the head by a large pan made of Element 13; the rightful (if not contractual) punishment those for perpetrating sins against the English language.

Can't? What's the issue there? Cannot and can not would seem to be largely interchangeable... but probably not.

I've realized one has to look up much hyphenated stuff...
Front-runner... but not wholly owned. Bleary-eyed - strongly held.
... his just (deserts, desserts)
Deceptive exercises.. have you burned through these Chris? I hit a few ten/ten but then poof, back to 5-6 right.

A little off topic perhaps, and in reference to a much earlier post, but I think Noodly Dronefest was a character in Bleak House.

Can I mention my revulsion/desire to do physical violence on the perpetrators of the form "alright" (or as I have winced at a couple of times, "alrite")?

So, opinions on the non-contracted forms of "can't", cannot and can not?

When I was in elementary school I was taught that "cannot" is an acceptable form of "can not," and my spell check for both word processor and web browser recognizes it as a word (if that counts for anything) but I've seen it edited as a typo in all my writing since high school. Either way I still use it.

Highschool anyone? Spell check says its wrong but I know I've seen it without the space plenty of times before and for some reason I just can't break the habit of typing it as one word before I correct it.

Or how about Loudmouth, Loud mouth, or Loud-mouth?

Also, what's the proper use of the prefix self, as in self-preservation, self-conscious, etc? I always hyphenate it but it just doesn't look right.
