Recommendations for non medieval europe type fantasy?

If you don't mind Europe, so long as it's non-medieval, you might try "Whitechapel Gods" by S.M. Peters. It's a pretty intense fantasy/sci-fi/steampunk read centered on fictional gods.

does such a thing even exist? Like eastern influenced fantasy for example?
I'm particularly interested in fantasy that deals with gods and so forth, and I distinctly remember reading about a book that had buddha as a god, although it may have been science-fiction and not fantasy...
I know this is rather vague, but any suggestions atall?
funny enough, I just recieved the book: "The Complete Pegana" by Lord Dunsay which is a collection of about 50 or so short stories from 1905, 1906 and a couple of later stories.

I have not read the whole book yet, but so far it's quite good and it's just the type of thing where a whole new mythos of 'gods' and God create the world, create the universe with all living things etc..

if you want something with a middle eastern flavour, you could try the arabian knights. very good read with some great stories

The Complete Pegana is a lovely read indeed. I guess it would depend on whether Primitius was looking for something based in the real world or not. If not, then Pegana is wonderful. I've read it several times. It's lyrical and always gives me the feeling of belonging to the Orient .... the mysterious East of old.

Kate Elliott's spirit gate series is very good and has an eastern, rather than european, setting.

LE Modessit has a number of books which show technological progress rather than the same old cod-medieval setting in the recluce saga. The writing can be poor, but there are some interesting ideas.
