HBO's first season for AGOT is 10 episodes long

Also, how do you think the series will effect the remaining books if it doesnt do well. Will he speed up the process or become disgruntled with the pressing fans and failed series and not finish?

I don't think it will have a significant impact on the remaining books at all. GRRM is very independent after all. I think the success of the series is enough that, if the tv adaption doesn't do so crash, GRRM will still keep on going. He's been dealing with pressing fans for years, and he also knows that there are enough of us out there happy to wait for quality. TV series can be quite fickle, especially if dependent upon audiences and broadcasters for success. I've seen some amazing series fail and some complete tripe go on for further series. In fact, sadly, it's the tripe that dominates. Fingers crossed this one goes well, especially seeing as its looking to be high quality.

I agree 100%. Sometimes it feels as if most television is a train wreck that people are watching becuase it's so bad or at least morbidly fascinating. I won't go into specifics, but there are some shows that boggle the mind just by existing and getting picked up for second seasons. As has been said previously, HBO does a pretty good job with it's shows, so given GRRMs involvement, the fact that the series will be based on great books, and HBO's standards, we have a lot of cause for hoping it will be a winner.

You know, the TV series might help George by distracting all his impatient fans away from emailing him, and instead see them emailing HBO...

Dear HBO,

I really loved the first episode of Game of Thrones so much! But I watched it last night, and now it's almost ten in the morning and I'm waiting for the next episode. I thought it would be out by now! It's been more than twelve hours! I got onto your website and it says the airdate isn't until next week! How can I possibly wait that long! That's ridiculous! Why are you wasting all your time making other shows? You should only be making Game of Thrones, and airing it back to back so that I don't have to wait. Honestly, did you even think about me? I thought not. Also, you look kind of fat so I'm worried you'll die before next week. So tie yourself to your camera, don't eat or sleep or even think about doing anything else, and finish filming this series!

Kind regards, a devoted fan!

Wow... Cul. Honest and hilarious excoriation. In the future, I'll try harder to not upset you.

A good one indeed, Cul.

Mind you, he has taken ten years for two novels, so I do understand some people getting a tad impatient. The "lose weight and don't die before you finish ASOIF" stuff is way beyond the Pale, though.

You're lucky I looked up the meaning of 'excoriation', because your comment was upsetting me...

Haha! Double touche Cul.

I think the series is a positive distraction for many people, though I will still always be more excited by the actual books. But seeing as many of the said tripe mentioned above has often gone on for 5 even 7 seasons and still counting, the prospect of several seasons of new ideas already created and waiting should be good.

The books just pick up momentum and start to get really exciting, all those twists and turns, its gold for the right producers. I also think out of several series I know of, ASoIaF lends itself the best to TV adaptation.

I agree, GRRM's writing is very cinematic. He has worked as a scriptwriter for TV before hasn't he?

*is too lazy to check*

I remember GRRM writing for a re-make of The Twilight ZOne and beauty and the Beast

On Martin's Not A Blog, he said he turned in the script today for episode eight. It's titled The Pointy End.

And ends with Littlefinger saying, "I did warn you not to trust me, you know."

I guess.
