Patrick Rothfuss Critiqued my Novel

Congratulations! I was in on that Heifer international event too - I won a book. Which is seriously cool but not nearly as cool as winning Patrick's critique of your novel (of course I couldn't have taken advantage of that, not having a manuscript and all). It is a great event and I was proud to be a part of it.

Now you must get down to work and get that thing published! How else are we to share in the coolness without buying your book??

Very impressed! I'm so pleased that someone like Patrick Rothfuss has made such an effort for a fellow writer as well, this sort of thing bodes well for humanity.

Congratulations Boneman! He's a great writer and will have given you lots of sound advise :)

And in due time, Boneman will be able to aid us mere mortals in a similar fashion. :)

So, I received the manuscript back today. Besides the five hours on the phone and discussing all the major scenes, he's edited the damn thing! Even pointed out spelling mistaikes... Where he's not sure, he writes 'hmmm...' in the margin, and occasional smiley faces or smiley with a wavey mouth if he thinks it's almost working.

He's written all sorts of comments, the sort you get when you're handed an essay back from the English teacher - 'what this implies', 'pov', 'showing', 'telling', 'nice', 'who is telling us this?' 'this is horrifying - nice job' (I'm particularly proud of that last one: I posted the scene on the chrons ages ago, asking fo help, and rewrote it loads of times: it was here, www.sffchronicles.co.uk/forum/48801-a-pov-shift-help-needed-possibly.html so thanks again to all those who contributed - Patrick Rothfuss liked the outcome of all your suggestions! He described it on the phone as 'a diamond of a scene'. When I look at it, and see how much it has changed, it shows me how good the chrons is!!)

So now I am going through my notes made at the time, his notes made at the time, and will start the re-write shortly. I'm sooo excited...and I just can't hide it... - even if I don't like Elton John!

That last post tells me (or shows me) that a step up in response is required:

Don't rush your editing, though. (And best of luck with it. :) )

That's great stuff, glad to hear he didn't just phone it in (sorry, I couldn't resist).

Looking forward to hearing the deafening roar of triumph when you get a publishing deal sorted.

Heh, this is awesome. The (very understandable!) excitement to your posts...:D

What a great opportunity. And I assume you kept his phone number? What's the most amount of calls you can make before people start thinking about restraining orders...? Five, maybe six calls a day?

And now, as others have said, to crack on and get that thing published!

Don't even worry about the restraining orders. I have a fool-proof method of getting around those after years of experience. Can't talk here. Meet me later. I'll send a car.

Oh what i would give for such an opportunity

Start saving now... he'll do it again next year. And I don't mind telling you that I go it for £900, (which all went to charity). Funnily enough, a partial critique by his agent (20,000 words only) went for more... I know I got the better deal!:D:D:D

* Doubts whether £900 will be sufficient next time. *

But "Bone Idol" - you can't say I didn't warn you - seems to be a real gent.

And I don't mind telling you that I got it for £900

From which I infer that Mrs. Boneman, who surprised you with this, is a most loving and supportive wife!

As for that critique by the agent which brought in higher bids, I have a sneaking suspicion that those who bid on it were secretly hoping the agent would love what he/she saw and offer to represent their novel.

Behind every successful man there's a woman... pushing... and I'm being pushed by one of the best!! It was awesome when she told me, I was totally gobsmacked for about thirty seconds, and for me to be speechless that long is an event in itself. What can I say? I hit lucky when she said 'I do' and XX years later, I still think that... All I have to do now is get published, to repay that faith...
