Catelyn recast in HBO series?

I wasn't sure whether this had been confirmed officially.

Has it?

I don't think that HBO has made an annmouncement, but it seems pretty official.

GRRM just updated his blog and made no mention of it though.

Yes. If The Hollywood Reporter is saying it, it can be taken as fact, as they operate solely on information provided to them from the TV and movie companies.

No definitive word has been given on why the recasting was done, although the official reason is that the producers wanted to take the character in a different direction, which might mean anything. There has been some speculation that this might be related to Ehle's home commitments (she had a baby just a few months before filming the pilot), but no further official information.

I haven't been able to find anything more than third parties saying this, so I wouldn't take it as fact yet. I am not quite sure where to go for an official source though, aside from GRRM's blog.

edit: Looks like I was beaten to the punch by people more knowledgeable than I. :)

She looks too old imo.
Catelyn is like 32-36 at most.
She looks to be in her ending 40ties.
Now i know middle ages was harder on perserving one youthy looks, but still, Catelyn is high society.

I completely agree. The Cat that I imagine is younger and prettier, with auburn hair. Michelle Fairley looks too old and not regal enough to be play the part. Maybe with good makeup...................

From her Wiki entry:

I think you'll find that it is her career that started in 1988, when she played the part of a cleaner in Hidden City.
That makes more sense. I didn't read it carefully enough

We'll have to see come she comes across on the screen (but I'm tempted to suggest that in both rôles she should be fairly good ).

In the books. Not in the TV series. Some things - a lot of the small details in particular - in the TV series will be totally different, and there's no real getting away from that. Anyone expecting a word-for-word, detail-for-detail recreation of the books to the level that every actor should be the precise age of the character is going to be very disappointed.

In addition, Michelle Fairley is a grand total of four years older than Jennifer Ehle, and maybe ten years older than Cat in the books. Contrast this to Eddard and Tyrion being fifteen years older than their characters, which has attracted next to no comments at all.

Further to Wert's comments, a lot of changes had to be made to make the production legal in many countries. You could not have, for instance, the marriage bed scene with Drogo and Dany with her being 13 years old. You'd break laws in the US, Canada, and other countries against child pornography. And neither GRRM nor HBO gloss over sex scenes.

A lot of details will be changed to fix problems like this, and also to allow the directors and producers to use the actors that they really want and trust with the roles.

Wert,

That is only because he haven't seen pics of the other characters yet.
If they had shown me a too old Ned, i would have mentioned it.

It's hard to go on just a couple of photos, but she looks a decent fit for me - and once they have lighting, styling and make-up on everyone, they can look quite different anyway. :)
