Reading Omnibus Editions

Yea I'm with you there Gollum,to me an Omnibus is a collection or gathering of similar works by an author or works in a series. Like the book I'm currently reading, The Space Trilogy is an omnibus edition of the 3 early books by Clarke. Also weekly TV shows like Eastenders that have all the episodes in one big omnibus edition on Sunday.

Personally, I love omnibusses;(a big six wheeler London transport diesel engined ninety-seven horse power…) it's that much better chance of not missing out on any of the volumes. Of course, they only bring out the omnibus version after I've hunted down volumes one and three of the trilogy, so I have to buy the whole thing for just one book…
But then I can lend the individual books out.

I remember almost scaring off a potential reader by enthusiastically giving him the complete Amber omnibus. I was sure he would get hooked but instead he was intimidated by the size and didn't even start it.
About 6 months later I slipped him a copy of Nine Princes in Amber and he buzzed right through it and then went out and bought the whole series in individual copies. Ah Well

Personally I love them and buy them often.

I like omnibusses for those series that have grabbed me. Then I don't have to wait until I can get my hands on the next instalment.

Also, I like that the omnibus edition is cheaper than buying the individual books separately. I recently bought one omnibus comprising of two books, that cost me about the same price as one of those books cost individually.

Time is usually not one of my constraints. I'm single, have no children and I have a job with regular working hours Monday to Friday only. So I can read for hours if I want to. A welcome change from my previous job, when I worked all the hours God gave me and barely had time to sleep. :)

Yea I'd be intimidated if someone slipped me a huge fantasty book too....;)

Thats a factor - a couple of the Omnibus editions I have would be the first thing i've read by the author.

Still I think I'm going to dive into the Dan Abnet one I have as it sounds like my kind of thing and gets great reviews; a good experience may help me shift some of the others from the TBR pile :)

I like them because I don't need to hunt for individual volumes but I'd prefer to have the individuals, easier to hold, usually better (and more) cover art, etc etc.

I like them but don't exclusively collect them. There's two at Goodwill I have my eye on: three early novels by John Le Carre and five novels by P.G. Wodehouse, $2.99 each in good shape. Should I get 'em?

Certainly, if you don't already have them individually. Maybe, if you do.
I've most by Wodehouse, and they're great. And some by Le Carre, also good.
