Thirteen months of twenty eight days each, every month starting with the same day of the week. and one and nearly a quarter days off for good behaviour If it hadn't been for the Babylonians wanting their factorials, and the sky cut into quarters and thirds and sixths, and superstitious fear of the prime thirteen, we could have had this logical scheme millennia ago. It maches the moon better, and human physiology.

The 'day out' everything is closed; try not to be born or die on it, it won't count.

Now, more serious; has anyone worked out a workable marking system for these stories? better than my 'knock of a point for the homophone "please" instead of "pleas" because, unimportant as it is it reduces my pleasure in reading, and that, totally subjective, quality is what I'm attempting (not over successfully) to calibrate. Like trying to judge a freestyle dancing competition, comparing break, classical ballet and soft shoe shuffle (but a maximum of three minutes performance).

A nice, universal, logical and, above all, repeatable system?

No system from me, I'm afraid, Chris. I go through and award notional marks out of 5 based on use of language, story content, intelligence, wit, and anything else in a semi-objective way. The top scorers make the short list, and then I go back and think about which I like best in a more subjective take. Then I throw my hands in the air, complain that I haven't got the three votes I need, and then mooch round the house grumbling.

Well, it works for me. Eventually.

TEIN, definitely we could get sponsors for the contest. Then we use the money to go on those fact-finding trips you were talking about before, which will enable us to write much better stories.

I'm in favour of sticking with months**. Okay, they vary in duration, but at least other folk have been kind enough to provide help for us in the form of calendars.

(And by the sound of it, having a system of WC1, WC2 and WC3 would would simply remind us that all but one of us are likely to be losers in each competition.:eek::))

** - Calendar months; using the ones based on the movement of the moon would, of course, be lunatic.

Each year should be no more than 24 hours long.

.....

Okay, maybe longer than that. That would make for an awfully old race of people, now that I think of it.....

Well it would give the illusion that the end was further away.

And we're bound to run out of cubicles.

We could use virtual reality ones.

Or would that end up being too emotional?:eek::)

Actually, I just thought of something....

What happens if a winner isn't available to actually start their month's challenge? Would it then go to the runner-up, or extend the deadline? And if it would get extended, how long could it be extended for?

Nope, the rules are that if the winner (of any particular month) doesn't announce something no later than the 5th, Culhwch and I put our heads together and come up with a theme.

Needless to state, we would rather see something posted as early in the month as possible.

(Someone should go to Scotland and shake that man awake. He's kept us waiting 52 minutes already.)

As I said a while ago, we don't really need two threads of comment on the Writing Challenges going at once. So I am shortly ... in a few minutes actually, going to lock this thread and the other one, and start a new all purpose thread.

If you have anything to say in this one, say it now.
