As a complete amateur/hobbyist writer I'm not sure I can say this with much authority but...
I can see your dilemma as so much of what you write is linked to your state of mind (I should one's state of mind, but you know what I mean). I really have to be interested in what I am writing and there are times when creating the more pedestrian background stuff engages me greatly, and other times where I just want to get to 'the action'.
As a result of this, I try to work in a non-linear fashion; although I will have a plan in terms of where the story is going (either written or in my head), I will happily FFWD or RWD on my mental remote control to a section I want to write. Not only does this fulfill my superficial need to be entertained, it also often brings opportunity in terms of fleshing out things that will happen prior (whether they have been written, or not) to what I may have already written - in some cases it also helps me trouble shoot.
Do you have a laptop/computer/mac? How are you writing? I have an ipad for when I am on the bus or tube, and if I get an idea/note for a new or existing story, i open up 'notes' in my iphone and type it in. When I plug either of them into my mac, it updates so that all my gadgets are in sync and I can copy/paste from Notes to Word. This works for me because I find if I make things easier for myself I am less likely to reach for the PS3 controller or Battlestar DVDs...
Finally, and in reference to my claim of being a hobbyist, I wonder if you should explore why you write. I don't know any other people who like to write but I write because I have to. I think I would go insane if I didn't get it down.
I hope this helps in some way
