31.06: The Vampires of Venice

I just re-watched this the other day. I quite enjoyed revisiting it. It picked up the thread nicely from the previous episode. There was some nice development there. The Doctor has seen what Rose's travels did to her relationship with Mickey (which was admittedly not so solid to begin with) and he doesn't want to be responsible for the same thing happening to Amy and Rory. Very sweet really. It shows he he has respect for their marriage and for them as people. The cake scene was hilarious. I loved his line "You know how something can sound so good in your head..."

The library card was also a wonderful continuity nod to the first doctor. I love it when they bring back those old faces, and I would assume that the library card was in fact for "The Library" where he first met River Song.

As for the vampire plot, nothing earth shattering but enjoyable nonetheless. I loved seeing the ancient venectian wearing Rory's buck's night t-shirt. The story took the approach which has been done before, to take a fantasy/mythological element and science fictionalise it. The alien fish were kinda cool. I can't help but think that if the "mummy fish" hadn't given up hope, then the Doctor would have figured out a way to save her species without hurting anyone else. But then again..."she didn't know her name".

Now time to log onto ABC iView and watch Amy's Choice.
