John Brunner- A brag.

That's one hell of a typewriter, Freak. It looks even more old-school than mine. Nice work! Some clever postery too!

Did you have to bid against anyone? To my shock, I found that I didn't.

No bidding at all, i bought it from the oxfam online shop for £170 ( cheap or what) i bought it to sell really and it is still up for sale until next week though i dont really want to sell it now, i have offered it to the liverpool university to display in their John Brunner collection for a couple of years if it doesnt sell, I didnt know much of jb before i bought it but having done some research on him i have become a bit of a fan, though i must admit i have not read any of his books yet, I am more interested in his life story, his writing life really is a tale of bad luck, but even great people like van gogh were not great until after they had died, i am sure this will be true of John Brunner . i have been looking for a copy of this by ian watson (your friend mentioned him earlier in the thread)"At The Wrong End of Time: An Appreciation of John Brunner" in NEBULA AWARDS 31 edited by Pamela Sargent, i believe it is a very good portrayal of his working life and the bad luck he had. I think eventually i would like to write a book about him on his own typewriter. who knows some of his magic may rub off on me, i just hope his luck doesnt rub off on me too.

j-wo have you looked inside it at all, mine had a small handwritten note written on the back of an old cheque stub, it had fallen down the front of the keyboard where he must have put it as a reminder, funny enough it seems to be a complaint about underpayment from his publisher. story of his life methinks.

Yes, we generally frown on such, but this was something of a special circumstance....
thank you for letting me get away with it, i did think you would have something to say about my rule bending but my knowledge on sci/fi would barely fill 1 post ,let alone 15.

In this case, it was obviously not for purposes of self-promotion, but to aid in furthering a thread's purpose, and sharing information (even if that information is in the form of a photo) with other fans of the man and his work.

Besides... what better way to encourage you to further your education in that field than to build a positive reinforcement for it....?:p

Hey j-wo, i would be very careful about shouting about your great find, i have just had a bad experience with oxfam over mine, they noticed i was selling it for a lot more on ebay, despite the fact i have a 25% donation to oxfam attached to any possible sale they decided to complain to ebay about me using one of their pictures of it on my ad and had it booted off, it also looks like i have been banned from buying at their online shop as well through it ,sour grapes methinks though i dont know why because i spent a few grand there last year and donated over a thousand pounds to them and other charities from my sales ,when you consider that £2 saves a life it makes you wonder why their shop manager would turn down a possible £1000 donation and my future purchases other than out of spite,i bought it in good faith and wasnt expecting this from a charity, mad or what i think JB,s bad luck has rubbed off on me and I am beginning to think i shouldnt have bought it:-(
