In the begining... (again) (1k words)

No, it's not normally hyphenated, but when you create a compound out of it, it has to be. It's like the difference between "He was in an ill temper" and "Feeling ill-tempered he threw the meal away".

Not sure about the 1am thing. The consensus is to write all figures under ten as words, but in this case it might be one way out of the problem.

Wielding the power of unreliable narrator, I've decided Martin no longer knows what time it is and refers to it as just-after-midnight. I figure that will spare me the headache of having to deal with this later... or worse get to a monkey with the mighty rejection stamp that doesn't like 1am.

(is this your character's own term, or is it an established term in the shapeshifting community, in which case it could be rephrased).

seems I missed another reply from earlier. I must be getting old or something.

But no, that's not the established term, my narrator doesn't spend any quality time with the other shapeshifters... except for his badger friend, but they don't normally speak of shapeshifting.
His mother, also a werecoyote, did not become so willingly, and doesn't like even acknowledging that she is one.
The werewolf girl he's in love with doesn't bring it up, because she's actually incapable. The half and half form takes practice and requires concentration to maintain. It's my cop out for why nobody ever finds "monster bodies." If knocked out or killed, they turn back to whatever full form they held last.

Eh, I feel somewhat obligated when I confuse people. It bugs me.

I cannot help you grammatically as I am not an English native, so my knowledge is limited in this area ... but regarding feeling of your story ... I cannot feel the fear of your character. When you are hunted by few wolves you really HAVE to be desperate. But this is my feeling

Regarding the 1am thing. I don't think it's a problem in this context as unless we are at the poles, the dim light would have nothing to do with the fact it was the first hour of the day; more to do with stars, moons or streetlights.

Just a slight headsup you've already been given-I noticed right away you spelled a word wrong in the title. "Beginning" has two Ns in the middle, not one.

I will go into a critique later on. I am sorry to say I am unable to now as I have filled my massive tummy full of turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, and deviled eggs for Thanksgiving dinner. :)
