Don't forget 15 minutes before the season finale of Boardwalk Empire on HBO on 12/5, a behind the scenes and preview. Be there or be square!

Sign me up for L7. I don't have HBO, nor do I know someone who has it... yet!

Thanks for the heads up. For those without HBO, I suspect that HBO.com will have that preview up by tomorrow. I no longer have a way to record off my TV, excpet with DVR, or i would offer to send you a copy Boaz.

Thanks for the offer, Imp. You are the man. I'll see it sooner or later...

Oh...My...God!!!!
I'm seriously excited about this show now.
Everything - EveryONE is looking perfect (or as close to as makes no difference)!
HBO is certainly not being cheap in the production value, and the cast... my goodness the cast... Cercei and Jaime were of concern - Lena Heady and Martin Coster-Waldau... they are perfect once in constume (admittedly it was only Lena i was concerned about. Some dark haired people can't pull off blonde (dye job or wig)... but she does it well). And Mark Addy... he was my biggest concern... but i can see him now as Robert - as a much fiercer young man, whos aged and gained a ton of weight living a rich life.

If I hadn't even heard of the books, I'd still want to see at least the first episode of Game of Thrones. They did a pretty good job of selling it as something serious, with no tongue even approaching cheek. The settings they've created look really good.

A few thoughts:
  • Having seen a glimpse of a Mediterranean-style King's Landing - something I hadn't really considered whilst reading - I now think it looks right.
  • Dinklage came across really well. Even though I knew he was a good actor, I was worried that his appearance might dominate the screen, in complete contradiction to the Tyrion we've grown to know. I believe, even more than I did before, that Tyrion is safe in his hands.
  • I liked Littlefinger's appearance of playfulness: no wonder no-one sees him as a serious player. (More fool them. :))
  • Dany's hair, which has been commented upon since the still shot was released, looked a good deal less false than I feared it might.
  • Overall, the cast looked fine; I still have a problem with Catelyn's appearance, though I'll probably forget this when I watch the series in earnest.

I'll get over it, but it's inexcusable for Jaime NOT to have golden hair.

I'll get over it but more slowly, Cat just doesn't look right

Overall i really like what they've done. Ours will be a much tougher crowd to please than people who haven't read the books.

Only bad thing was, while watching it on HBO they literally had commercials! They would show a few minutes then say "Game of thrones will continue" then they'd show upcoming movies and what have you from HBO then back to our program. They did this at leat twice.Arrgh it should have been a full 15 minutes of all Game of Thrones.

Other than that everything looks amazingly great.
Bran looks nearly exactly as pictured even Sansa and Araya look great.
I'll need to see more of KIng Robert though.....

Littlefinger was better than I could have hoped, and an amazing job on the hound as well. Catelyn didn't bother me so much cause I think of her more as a Storm of Swords cat than A game of Thrones cat, a more tormented character. The only part I didn't see closely to my minds eye was the look of Drogo's men, they seemed a bit cartoonish. I suppose I should watch it again. Jon Snow's rounder face is a bit of a bother but I can deal with it.

After a rewatch: my criticisms are so minor they were barely worth typing.

I watched this preview 3 times in a row, with plenty of pause and rewinds. I'm looking forward to it but I'm concerned it may not be gritty or real enough??? It's a fantasy, but I think what got everyones attention from reading the books was the realism in an unreal world. I look at the little Arya on the screen and I can't see her saying "camels c***". Or Tyrion alone with Sansa after their wedding. I'm hoping that just for the previews purpose they deliberately omitted the less than savoury elements of Game of Thrones.

Yes, Drogo and his men appeared to be wearing too much mascara, though I would still not think about messing with any of them.

southron sword-I think it will be gritty enough, it's HBO.

I have been holding back, intellectually (no wise cracks) and emotionally on the series. But halfway through the preview, I caught myself grinning like a fool. So I guess, I'm in...

Oh, boy.

Visually, it looks impressive. I thought the Targaryen (everyone was saying tar-GAIR-yen) hair would look stupid, but it actually accentuates the Valyrian otherness to me. Viserys looks terrific. Arya, Sandor, Tyrion, Drogo, and the others look good. Now Jaime (yes, Martin called him Jay-mee... hmmmm) does not have long golden locks, but other than that he looks very good. From the books, I have the opinion that Cersei likes to accentuate her bosom in her clothes.... Miss Headey looks good and delivers that one line ("So was I.") perfectly, yet as Jaime's hair is downplayed so are Cersei's breasts.

Now I thought that Catelyn's looks are excellent. She's not the beauty that Cersei nor Dany are (even though she is a handsome woman), but the worries and griefs of bearing five children, dealing with Jon, handling dire wolves, fretting over a crazy sister, frustrated by a weak brother, concerned about her prodigal uncle, frigtened of losing her father, and heartbroken at her husband's departure and dissolution of her immediate family appear to be written all over her face and demeanor. I know I've been hard on Catelyn for years, but this actress (my apologies for not knowing her name) seems to be absolutely nailing Catelyn during this limited preview. I was impressed with Catelyn.

Continuing with the visual... The sets look well done. Yet as a real fan, I thought the small details were the best. Viserys sported a two-headed (maybe it was three) dragon brooch and Littlefinger wore a mockingbird clasp.

Noticably missing were views of the direwolves and Needle. I'm anxious to also see Renly and Barristan.

The knowledge of the story and the intensity to bring their characters to life that the actors portraying Tyrion, Jaime, Jon and Dany have gives me hope.

And some of the unsavory elements can be left out entirely or cleaned up. SPOILER ALERT!!! Jaime and Cersei do not need to be in flagrante delicto when Bran catches them, but Bran needs to be defenestrated. We don't need to see Viserys' face melting, but Drogo needs to kill him and we need to see Dany's reaction. We don't need to hear Rorge's vile comments to Arya, but we need to know that he is a bad, bad man.

It's maddening trying to watch this... either my internet stinks or the hbo site is awful becos it stops and freezes every 3 seconds when I try to play it. Anyone else having trouble like this?

I have been holding back, intellectually...

No stretch for you, I take it?

Now Jaime (yes, Martin called him Jay-mee... hmmmm)

I noted that, and gritted my teeth. On Cattle-in, too. The man doesn't even know how to pronounce his own character's names!

I couldn't even get it up on HBO's site. Check it out on YouTube. Don't have the link for you, but if you search I'm sure it'll come up.

...he did just leave that hanging out there for the picking...

Anyway, the preview looks fantastic. I'm practically giddy. The one issue I had was eye color. Lannisters weren't green and Targaryens weren't violet. Hopefully that's something they can tweak with CG in a properly understated manner.

And, bonus link:
Watch 10 Minutes of Game of Thrones !!! - TV.com

This link worked far better than the HBO site.
How were you able to see their eye color? I hope they do tweek the color like you said.

One of the best parts is the scowl on Tyrion's face when all the swords are pointed at him towards the beginning.

I had that trouble with the HBO site; as others have suggested, the YouTube version - as linked to via NotaBlog - is much better; I didn't suffer a single freeze when watching it.
