15 minute preview/behind the scenes HBO

southron sword-I think it will be gritty enough, it's HBO.

It's HBO doesn't mean too much to me. Iv'e seen Rome and I enjoyed it a lot. I hope all HBO series are like that. I don't have HBO on TV, so I'm not used to what HBO can produce.

Either way I think I'll treat this series as it's own thing.

HBO has consistenly produced great television for at least the past decade. I'm confident that GRRM's involvement, coupled with their track record of finding winners and being willing to do what's necessary to produce them, will equal success. I think that the biggest problem will be for fans of the books. Not everyone will be happy with everything that is done, and I fear that almost everyone will have something to complain about, if that's their desire. The internet has turned everyone into a critic.

Well put Imp, I believe HBO is best just look at Sopranos, The Wire (featuring a future Little Finger) Oz and many more great shows.

Yes the internet has turned out so many critics of movies,Tv and sports.

Proof that there's never any pleasing a die hard... one poster complains the previews don't look nearly gritty enough, another complains that the previews look way too gritty without enough flash and ostentation. :p

Yup, that's about the sum of it I suppose.

I should make it clear though that nothing I mentioned before is reason enough to make me not watch the show. It's the near-endless procession of book-to-film/tv productions that, even under the best circumstances, have still left me thinking they just weren't necessary. Simply put, I'd rather spend the time it takes to watch the series re-reading one of the books.

Sure, I'd watch the show if it aspired to precisely match my personal impression of the books (ego can be a wonderful thing :D), but even then it would only be to admire the visuals. After all, I have a fair idea of what's going to happen!

PS to The Judge: Deadbeats? DEADBEATS!? Just because you write cracking stories month after month doesn't give you the right to judge us! Even if, erm, you are, y'know, The Judge... Bah, who the heck is this
Roger Allawhassit anyway? Never heard of him. Ergo, he must be a crappy actor and I hate him. :p

No critiques here. No wet blanket.

Looks awesome.

Only HBO could of done it. Could you imagine if any of the major networks would of done it.

Hmmm. If No One's never heard of him... that's a double negative... so...

Well...
He has been nominated three times for the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor, winning once. He has also been nominated for, and won, the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actor.
I'm pretty sure he's also been nominated for Best Actor in a Musical, but, to be frank, his performance here isn't going to make you change your mind about his acting skills!

HBO consistently delivers and I'm sad to have missed Boardwalk Empire thusfar. The internets will save me in that regard, I'm sure. I think HBO's best must be Carnivale, though. I recommend everyone who hasn't seen it stop what they're doing and rectify that shortcoming immediately if not sooner ;)

I don't know how much we'd like seeing of a pretty but henpecked version of Jaime, especially since Cersei is going to have to be very aggressive.

i thought that the actor playing Jaime was perfectly chosen. Any more prettiness and no-one could believe that he's supposed to be the deadliest fighter in all of Westeros. I also don't find his look to be a departure from the way i see him when i picture what is described in the book. Certainly he's not the same image, but he's far closer that the likeliest choices (would you believe a Brad Pitt pretty-boy as Jaime)
As for George's pronunciation of Jaime's name as Jay-Me... thats always how i read it as being pronounced. pronouncing it Jame smells of naming ignorance. Every Jaime spelt that way in realworld situations that i've come across, is pronounced either Jay-Me or High-Me (the spanish ones i've met at least)... at least imho... seriously. george barely alters normal names in his series... and almost all of them seem likely to be pronounces as we would pronounce their real world versions.

Catelyn as Cat-Lin (i couldn't hear his pronunciation clearly on any replay) or Cattle-In... its his character i suppose. He can pronounce it how he likes... and i'll shudder slightly every time its said that way in the show... but i'll always read it as Cate-Lin

Yeah, it was interesting to hear GRRM pronounce some of the names. I was glad to hear my pronunciation of Daenerys was bang on and I've always said Jaime as Jay-mee. I noticed, when saying Cersei, GRRM put the emphasis on the second syllable, i.e. "ser-saay", whereas I've always just said "sersy". Oh, and I guessed Catelyn was pronounced Catlin when Arya became Cat of the Canals, but I've always said Kate-linn too.

(would you believe a Brad Pitt pretty-boy as Jaime)

Sorry, Brad Pitt is a pretty boy? Granted, earlier in his career he did play a few (very few) roles that may have given that impression but his better roles in Kalifornia, True Romance, Seven, Twelve Monkeys, Fight Club, Snatch, Troy, Babel, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Inglourious Basterds, Burn after Reading, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button surely puts him apart as a very versatile and talented actor and not a "pretty-boy".

Sorry for the off-topic rant but I am defender of Brad!!!:p

Yeah, Brad Pitt is definitely not a pretty boy! Not a fan of him myself, but he's not what I'd call a pretty boy. (Pretty boys are more like Taylor Kitsch, Ben Barnes, Chace Crawford... Kit Harington. *drool*)

And while I don't see Jaime as a 'pretty boy' I definitely picture him (in my head) as being prettier than the ugly actor fella playing him in the series.

And why couldn't a pretty fella be a hard-ass?!

Anyhoo... I've now got certain lovelies in my head and can't remember what I was going to say.

I did google his name and I'm pretty sure I've seen him before (I didn't resort to IMDB though, so I don't know where).

I'm of the opinion (along with Ursa and some others) that a lot of an actor is in the script, the directing and editing, so his acting skills aren't necessarily something that should be a concern.

And agreed with TK above - Brad Pitt is a very versatile and capable actor (damn him!). Also, sorry for the off-threadedness.

*Indeed Mouse, it could be argued that being a pretty boy would require Jaime to be even more of a hard-ass than most.

But... but....

* Decides not to continue in case he reveals too much. *

I've always said Jay-me (Jai-me) and Cersei as Sir-see. Cattle-in will grate on me some if that's the way they'll be pronouncing it in the series.

I can't help but think of the Prince from Shrek II when I see the HBO Jaime.

I don't really picture characters, but if anyone was going to come close, it would probably be that Jaime. I really like the progression of him in the books, and this guy looks like he'd fit it well.
