medieval fantasy recomendations

Look up Tim Powers' The Drawing of the Dark. Also M. Lackly's The Lion of Venice, and the other books in that series.

By the way, it's not our governments it's our selves that are causing our decline. Most Democracies assume a basically moral population. A selfish people doesn't allow for a stable society. If you don't believe we as a people are lawless, drive the speed limit and see how often you get passed. Speed limits are the law.

Tim Powers is brilliant, but I wouldn't call his books "heroic/epic". Still worth a read, though. Anyone who can write a book about magic beer ("The Dark" in the above title) gets a thumbs-up from me, and The Anubis Gates is just wonderful - quasi-steampunk time-travelling historical fantasy set in London between the 17th century and the near future. I just hope Hollywood doesn't ruin my memories of On Stranger Tides with its PotC version...

Do you mean Mercedes Lackey? I haven't read "The Lion of Venice", but I find most of her other books are squarely aimed at a young female audience - probably not going to appeal to a fan of Conan!

I was thinking that Joe Abercrombie has a medieval feel to his fantasy books, good stories, brutal baddies, fantastic anti-heroes, political intrigue, good action and a dark humour about his novels. And one unforgettable torturer.

Elizabeth Moon's Deed of Pakensarrion is the finest trilogy I have read in any genre. Gritty realism, noble heroics, riveting plots, this is the book I want to be buried with. Also, any fantasy from Louise Cooper is also very enjoyable.
