Does it get better? *SPOILERS*

From what I can remember of that section, that is exactly what she does see. That's why she's running so fast, because he's wheeled his horse around and is coming after her...and running as fast as she can towards the castle to her mother, of course.

True.

This is an example, really, of the POV character assuming what's happening while not knowing for sure. While this example is trivial, I daresay that GRRM has got us thinking some things have or haven't happened purely because one or other of the POV characters "knows" that it has or hasn't, even though it hasn't or has.

On such tenuous threads hang any number of desperate theories about who may or may not be still alive....

Well, we're talking third-person limited here, not first-person - some license is going to be taken in such a POV. Besides, I think she'd feel the axe blow to the head - no need to see it at all to describe it such.

^^ Yes but considering what was happening, all the panic and whatnot it could have been anyone's axe. I reckon it was just because she knew he was chasing her and she has ears, so she'd be able to hear stranger's hooves right behind her..

Syrio is dead. Build a bridge and get over it.
Blaspemy. Admittedly, Syrio is PROBABLY dead, but I wouldn't bet the farm on it. I'm sure you know all the arguments pro and con, so I won't bore you with them.

Oh, I know the arguments well. I'm still convinced he is dead. And even if he isn't, there's no way - no way! - that he's Jaqen.
Never say never :)

I agree that if he is alive he's probably not Jaqan, but the question of how a faceless man ends up in a jail cell right at the time that Syrio vanished has never been adequately explained to me. Say for a second Syrio=Jaqn. He could have easily changed forms and gotten into one of the cells. Isn't that what FM do?

Anyway, this is old territory, maybe we'll have a definitive answer one day.
