Was checking out the character listings on the winter-is-coming site.Whatever the site is I followed the link. Did I miss something or why is it listed as Robin Arryn? A spelling error? Been a while since I've read any of the books, I'm fairly certain it's Robert. Please correct me if I am crazy...

Interestingly enough, I was just having a discussion about GRRM's use of duplicate names and little Robert's came up. He was also called Robyn, especially by Sansa,

Is this about the TV character vs book character? I read somewhere that the TV producers decided to change Robert Arryn to Robin Arryn to avoid any confusion with Robert Baratheon. Apparently they believed viewers wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a sickly six year old and the loud, drunken king of Westeros if they were both called Robert.

Robb Stark (named for Robert Baratheon) is another major character. And minor characters mentioned will probably include Robar Royce (middle son of Bronze Yohn and Kingsguard to Renly), Robett Glover (one of Robb's captains, instrumental in assisting Roose Bolton capture Harrenhal and the leader of the disaster at Duskendale), and Robin Ryger (captain of Riverrun's men at arms). There are also lesser Robs, Robbs, Roberts, Robins, and Robyns...

Also Robin conjures up an image of a very sweet little boy. I imagine people will be even more shocked then when Robin suckles and shouts "I want to see him fly!"

And then again, HBO owns the rights... they've made a number of successful, big budget shows so I suppose they know what they're doing. I'm thinking of them as another layer of editors for a second platorm release.

Given HBO's track record of successful programing, I completely trust them to get it right. I've not watched every series that they've done, but all that I have watched have been among the best TV ever produced, IMO, The SOpranos, Oz, The Wire and Boardwalk Empire being just a few examples.

The Winter-is-Coming site is specifically related to the television series, so the name change wouldn't be shown on that Wiki page. As has been said, it was changed to avoid confusion. How many shows or movies have you ever seen where characters shared names?

I know this one - it's Kramer vs Kramer isn't it?

That wasn't part of the deal. I want my prize. One copy of ADWD please. :D

Kramer vs. Kramer is a good one.... Also...

Hart to Hart.

On Newhart, there was the character Larry and his brother Darryl... and his other brother Darryl. Larry never seemed to have a problem knowing who was who.

I have no clue what Newhart is, and it's besides the point anyway...

It's all well and good for us, as readers of the novels, to scoff at these 'unnecessary' name changes, but who hear can tell me that on the first or second read-through you didn't have to flick back a few pages or skip ahead to the family listing to work out who such-and-such a character was. It's hard enough keeping everyone straight throughout the novels, with the added benefit of a slower pace and triggers such as POV chapters to clue us in on who might be whom.

aSoIaF virgins watching the television show aren't going to have the same luxury. Things will move quicker. Exposition is removed, leaving only dialogue to identify people. Imagine two characters, neither of whom is Robert or Robert, talking about Robert. Wait, what? I thought Robert was the king? He's suddenyl a sickly boy? I don't understand! I'm turning this junk off...

I've never had to look at the appendix or flip back a few pages. I've kept it all straight ever since Jon found those dragons in the snow. From the Young Wolf to the Old Boar, from Strongbear to Middlefinger, from Tyrion hiring Conan to Frodo Baratheon travelling to Valyria, I'm pretty sure I've kept it all straight.

PS - Newhart was an American, 1980's sitcom.

And yes, it is beside the point. I agree that a diversity of names can help the newcomers to identify the characters more readily. And I'd hope that ASOIAF fans would take this change in stride. Robert or Robin is not worth getting upset over. Robert/Robin defying the result of the trial and tossing Tyrion through the Moon Door anyway will be something to get upset about.

We could have pop up bubbles with "said Robert, King of Westeros" or "said Robert, who was clinging to his mother Lysa" but it would be a little distracting.

Pop Up Video! I mean it is a song of ice and fire.

And by the way, I recently watched Life, a TV series about a cop seeking to balance learning to live with seeking vengeance for spending twelve years in jail for a crime he did not commit. Anyway, his ex-partner's name... Robert Stark.

If there's one thing that's become painfully apparent, it's that there are people out there who gain sustenance, much in the same way that vampires need blood, from arguing and complaining about anything and everything. They are already preparing their lists of grievances, and changing Robert to Robyn will certainly be on it.

Yeah I can anticipate a lot of nit-picking to come. I don't really have a problem with them changing Robert Arryn to Robin, I guess I just believed the audience are a little smarter than that. But maybe you should never under-estimate the stupidity of your fellow man. ;)

I've read about a few changes already and none of them seem unreasonable, even though they introduce scenes that aren't strictly canon. You just can't compare TV/film to a book. They are totally disparate media.

Simon and Simon!!! Dude, two of my best friends in college looked like Simon and Simon. The blonde guy was slick and the balding guy was a cowboy. And they roomed together. We called them Rick and AJ.
