I recently purchased the first three books of A Song of Ice and Fire (A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings and A Storm of Swords) and must admit that I was very disappointed to see the "a new series coming soon from HBO" ad on my expensive hardback edition of A Clash of Kings. Luckily A Game of Thrones doesn't have it. I've yet to receive A Storm of Swords; hopefully it won't contain the ad.
You know, I wouldn't have cared if it was a sticker, but the HBO ad is non-removable!
First of all: I don't watch TV. Second of all: I don't even get HBO in on my TV. Third of all: I've no interest in the show. Fourth of all: Couldn't the ad have been either a removable sticker or at least stuck inside of the book - not on the cover?
I've honestly never seen anything like this on a hardback edition of a book before. Cheap, mass-market paperbacks are the only editions of books where cheap advertising of this sort is acceptable - not on expensive hardbacks. A $20+ price-tag should exempt you from having to see ads of this sort, no?
What are your thoughts on this? Do you also find that it cheapens the book and just looks plain ugly?
Anyway - I acknowledge that what's in the book matters more than what's on the dust-jacket, but still . . . gah.
