Writing Challenge Discussion -- FEBRUARY 2011

Your honor, may I suggest that you want to separate the einkorn, from the emmer, and the spelt. :D

That confused me greatly to start with! I use 'Emmer' as my username on another forum.

You're not wild Emmer, are you?

(And it sounds as if you might suffer from strong glooms.:rolleyes::))

I'm not very domestic...

Tis just how my name gets pronounced down yer.

Seeing plenty of strong entries from first-timers. I blame Judge, continually pointing out the contest to newcomers.

Nice bit of humour from Alchemist though - I only wonder if there's a risk of alienating any Hasselhoff fans. C'mon, don't be afraid and let's have a show of hands. Anyone? Anyone? No, I thought not.

I think Freda keeps most of these folks at bay. Watch out, though, because some may sneak through to bitch about your post.

Well, I don't get it. Hasselhoff is a musician? Know the name, but ...(looks up Hasseloff) ohhh. Die Arzte could open.

Bless that spider, but somehow I find the prospect of having David Hasselhoff fans moaning at me less than daunting. In fact, yes, I'm correlating my feelings with an appropriate word and "laughable" just keeps popping up.

And Hasselhoff is a musician!? News to me :D

No bird** for me, TEiN, but my justice is swift. (Hard to swallow, I know.)

And thanks, HareBrain and Parson. Typically, after holding off on posting for 24 hours to allow for further ideas/improvements, a better penultimate line came to me this afternoon. *hits head against wall*

** cockney rhyming slang for those outside the UK -- bird is short for bird-lime = time, = a prison sentence

Aha, now I get it. Sometimes I feel like an alien coming from Norway and all :)

In honor of the current discussion and challenge states, we'll go with another Simon and Garfunkel classic - one they actually wrote this time.

"Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence

"

It has gone silent, hasn't it. Three days to go for those who still haven't written anything. I've lost track. Which of our usual contributors haven't posted a story so far this month?

We have a respectable 46 stories, but it would be nice to hit 50 again.

On the other hand, it's going to be hard enough choosing a winner as it is, and late entries are often so good. So ... hmmm ... maybe best if it stays right where it is.

Any thoughts on getting more people to vote, anyone?
Perhaps a mention of the contest at some point in the other forums?

We've mentioned it before in other forums. Without any visible result. The only person I know about who was reading and voting without participating was pyan, and he's given us a lovely entry this month. Besides, he was involved in the original discussion about whether there would be a monthly challenge in the first place. We didn't manage to lure him in, because he was already here.

It's strange, because I thought that members would be drawn here by curiosity to read free stories written by people they know. But it turns out that I was wrong, because they don't seem to be interested at all.

I'm still kind of new to these forums, so how does voting work for these? I assumed that the moderators voted or you had some sort of panel arranged. If not, I will gladly remove my entry to help pick a winner. I wrote it for fun and it didn't come out too great anyway.

Heck no, Tate, any member of the entire site can vote, but many seem to be blinded by the amassed brilliance and can't choose, so we've ended up with fewer votes than entries a couple time? There are stats available.
There is a magic page that appears where you can vote with a single clik. Your story is perty good. Someone will probably now mention what happens to people who ....decry their own fabulous ability.

If they make a habit of belittling themselves and their talents they get slapped. Particularly those who have actually won the Challenge. Naming no names. They know who they are.

As for the voting, when the Challenge closes for entries, Culhwch will shortly appear with a link to the poll (which is on a polling site, not here, so that it can handle the large number of entries). He'll post the link in this thread and also in the last message on the thread where the stories are. Click on the link and you're there. Another click for your vote, and you're done. That's the easy part. Deciding the one story that most deserves that vote is the part that most of us find difficult.

Any Chronicles member can vote.

Me again. But, hey, if you don't want me to post... I know when I'm not wanted.

Yeah, that really should have said, "which of our usual contributors besides Culhwch, of course, haven't posted a story so far this month?" :D

That's a real dilemma, Cul -- no, we don't want you to post ... err ... I mean, yes, you should definitely post, but ... hmm, well.

But, hey, if you don't want me to post... I know when I'm not wanted.

You more than anyone, I think, have a habit of throwing off my calculations with your last minute inspirations. So don't expect me to beg you to write a story.
