Popped t'library earlier and got a random collection of science and film study books. Currently reading Theories For Everything: An Illustrated History of Science from the Invention of Numbers to String Theory. Enjoying it, and I'm only on the first chapter.

Mine turned up on Friday - I hadn't realised that was before the official release date

JD beat me to the punch....:)

Chetserton, it would be fair to say, held an often deliberate minority view on a range of topics and as my book agent says "not an overly likeable individual" BUT most readers seem to tolerate his personal side due to his often superb dexterity of the English Language and obvious genius.

I'll be suprised if you do not enjoy Man Who Was Thursday.

What personal side, info about him am i missing ? The only personal info i found was about him saying he was a liberal and conservative at the same time.

Im the kind of reader anyway who would find even the most hateful, unlikeable person to be a fav writer if he has brilliant storytelling or brilliant with words ala Lord Dunsany or Chesterton.

I never imagine important writers as people i want to hang out with even if i could in a What If. I see them as artists who can move me with their words but their real personality, politics dont mean anything even if i agree with their views.

Just finished The Fabulous Riverboat by Philip Jose Farmer. It was mediocre reading at best...not nearly as good as To Your Scattered Bodies Go, which I read years ago. I probably won't continue with the series. Next up for me is The Accidental Time Machine by Joe Haldeman.

I'm exactly the same. There are other people, several of my friends included, who refuse to read books by certain authors because of their specifc viewpoints even when they acknowledge the author is excellent at what they do. It's very much a case of what ones personal persepective on or approach to reading is I think....:)

A recently rescued cat had a bit of a disagreement with my copy of Stone's Fall. The book lost. So I went and bought a new copy today as I was only halfway through. I guess that shows how gripping Pears' latest novel is!
